Looks and sounds like the growly Biggin Spitfire has just had a brief trip out west and back again over Caterham…
I heard a Merlin very loudly just before 6PM tonight coming from Biggin, it sounded like take off. I couldnt see it.
Spitfire Mk.XVIe TE311 heading south over Boreham disused
Ha! Have just been treated to a display by a clipped wing spitfire going in and out of Biggin Hill. Nice and low about 20 mins ago.
Fighter collection Mark V?
Worth getting up for:)
With statements like ‘A few tickets remain for Sunday’ I have decided to switch to the Saturday , too much of a risk to focus my plans on Sunday only to be turned away after frittering away an hours fuel.
Having seen the two Lancs at Headcorn the draw for me on the Sunday was to catch the Red Arrows for the last time this season plus they always look extra good at Duxford.
The Reds looked spectacular at Sunset tonight, spotted them gliding Biggin Hill way with smoke on, great sight!
I have to address her as “sir” every time I pop into the office!… 😀
My apologies, Miss, Ms, lol
Thank you The Freshest 🙂
Out of interest, was it this V2 attack that your grandmother was injured in/her family members were killed? http://blogs.iwm.org.uk/transforming-iwm-london/2012/11/a-v2-explosion-in-lambeth-during-the-second-world-war/
Hello Sir, no it was in 1944 in Petts Wood/Bickley area. She had moved to Petts Wood by this time. It was the bombing of a pub called the ‘Crooked Billet’. Today it has a Harvester on the site and is marked with a Blue Plaque to commemorate the loss of life.
Hope this helps.
Having seen a bit of the build up to the re-opening of the museum on ITV news a week or so ago I decided to take a trip over to Lambeth today.
My Nan lived almost opposite the museum (just of Lambeth walk) and was born on Fitzalun St in 1920. She is still with us at 94 and every meeting is a history lesson! She vividly remembers in WW2 the ‘reconnaissance aircraft with black crosses’ circling overhead before incendiaries were dropped before a raid and she was herself was ‘blown up’ by a V2 rocket killing her mother, father and husband, she spent the next three years in St Thomas’s Hospital and has the shrapnel inside her to prove it!
Sorry back to the thread. I arrived at the museum at midday and was given a WW1 gallery ticket free of charge for 2:30, the layout is much different, I like the old atrium better (FW190 and Mustang set up), but the information is much more informative I think and presented nicely. The WW1 galleries have had such a lot of work put into them, I spent over 2 hours and a half in there. There is so much reading material and together the with posters, photography, film, exhibits and soundtrack made it a special experience. Thinking back on yesterdays visit I dont think ‘the trenches’ walk through is still there which is a shame I thought that was great.
Make the trip, its well worth it.
Great set of photos!
Looking back the after an airshow I normally pick out the highlights of the day. I can look back on Yesterday’s show and honestly say it was brilliant from start to finish. Even the modern day element seemed to fit in with the theme and any participating aircraft had their involvement clearly outlined by the commentators. Ground static displays were also excellent with again a mix of re-enactment and present day. Entrance fee was well worth it and the weather was an improvement on Saturday. Good day all round, well done Duxford.
I could not agree more with your view on the day. I too would like to thank the IWM for a superb airshow on Sunday.
I am really enjoying this thread! Thanks for posting.
Thanks for posting the photos. Ive got New Zealand on my mind a lot at the moment as a friend is back from NZ and has his wedding next week. Would love to make it over to Wanaka for the airshow, but its expensive Im sure from UK.
Surely it must be doing other display dates and pairing with BBMF? BBMF usually display at combined ops. Missed chance otherwise I would say, all the same will definitely take the short trip to Headcorn for this!
I like the second shot a lot, thinking out loud it could almost pass as an ‘Art’ installation maybe in the Tate with the wings hung like that.
Actually it was his first flight ever in this particular Spitfire. Rod Dean or Jack Brown were usually hogging it when it was based at Duxford in the past! 😉
I remember a particularly moment at Shoreham airshow a few years back. Rod Dean brought SM845 back after departing the airshow as the weather was too bad to get it back into Duxford. May have been a Battle Of Britian anniversary airshow, lots of spitfires there that year!
Two Bi-planes possibly WW1 Era in formation, quite low over Chelsfield on Wednesday. Possible camera or film sortie with some Dogfighting?
Amazing shots though, thanks for posting.
