I’d also like to say that I don’t photograph or video any aircraft while it is flying, I just stand there and watch, and listen to, the sights and sounds of the show. I’m not the slightest bit bothered by a PBY Catalina, or anything else, taxing past or running its engines up (unless it blows my hat off!), while other aircraft are displaying; that’s all part of what I come for!
Personally I don’t take any photos/videos either. I’d much rather watch and listen to the display in front of me, rather than through a small screen.
I do get a little frustrated at places such as Duxford when aircraft are taxing and running up their engines during displays if they are drowning out aircraft I want to hear (eg merlin engines), but having been to Duxford plenty of times now, it’s pretty easy to avoid this by picking the right spot.
Having just returned from Old Sarum, and having been at Dunsfold a couple of weeks ago, the attempts at ‘comedy’ from Melvyn are cringeworthy, as are his constant flirtations with female commentators.
Ben Dunnell remains one of the best commentators around, IMO.
NO, especially when a merlin engine can be heard 😉
+1.
I don’t mind music being used before displays commence to set the atmosphere, as they often do at Shoreham and did to an extent at Legends this year, but once the displays commence I want to hear the engines, not music.
Stunning aircraft that absolutely thrilled me. The Spitfires…one my old mate Jim had been in charge of between lending it to Ginger at 57 OTU was my personal highlight as I’ve not laid eyes on her before…the Spitfires were stunning. That’s the most apt word. I’ve seen some marvellous Spitfire displays and flights but I was holding back tears watching them on Saturday, they were superb. If the pilots do indeed want to know how well they displayed then, as far as I am concerned, those of you up in the Spits displayed beautifully. It was so good the rest of the show was just icing 🙂
Quite agree. The display was excellent. To be honest I’d be in 7th heaven to attend an airshow with just Spitfires, though maybe with some Hurricanes, Mustangs and Buchons thrown in!
My only very minor gripe with Duxford is that I believe it would make more sense for the start of the displays to be brought forward to 12 or 1300. As it is, the displays usually finish at around 1730, leaving only 30 minutes or less before the museum closes.
Aside from that, my trips to Duxford are always worth the 160 mile trip from Bristol. Looking forward to Spitfires Merlins and Motors next Saturday.
Mid Air Squadron Hunter & Canberra heading roughly in the direction of Shoreham, en route to Folkstone, about 2.40 PM.
Hunter came back again about 3.10 on it’s own.
Shortly after, a Spitfire IX , possibly either the Grace’s or RW382 from Biggin (couldn’t make out which, but the call sign was India X-Ray), heading south west not long after.
Cheers
Paul
Biggin Spits TA805 and RW382 displayed twice this afternoon in Lymington, Hampshire at a D Day event so most likely it was one of those.
Griffon Spitfire over Bradley Stoke, Bristol about 20 min ago.
Saw the Lanc around 3pm over Bradley Stoke, Bristol. Heading for Wales. Lovely surprise!
The BBMF Lancaster took off from Hurn at 1530, followed by a merlin Spit 10-15 minutes later.
Just back from Hurn seeing the BBMF depart & return from White Waltham. SM520 flown by Phil O’ Dell took off a couple of times, and did a loop before joining the circuit each time, which was a nice bonus!
The Lancaster has just arrived at Hurn. 😎
Have to say I’m surprised to see it as it’s chucking it down here atm!
Well done lads. 🙂
I was hoping to see it, but unfortunately the wind is in the wrong dierection for where I live today! I heard the merlins though, so that’s something.
If the weather keeps up like this, I’ll be very suprised if the BBMF go ahead with their display. at 2.
A BBMF Spit & Hurricane (unable to identify which but the Spit was a merlin), overhead at 1325 en route to land at Bournemouth after displaying at Weymouth.
Also, The Red Arrows at 1435 en route to Bournemouth, & again at 1725 returning from a display at Weymouth.
The Lanc is due to arrive at Bournemouth tomorrow at 0930, so hopefully I’ll see it.
🙂
30 years old ,possibly not bought up with model kits and airshows so need someone they can associate with,
16-30,never heard of the BoB or a Spitfire ,let alone made a model kit ,well you will need a younger star BUT that wouldn’t get everyone else involved.
I bet statistics would show that more people who wouldn’t have normally watched did because he was in it than people who deliberately didn’t watch it because he was in it.
Bottom line is ,we didn’t finance it ,we didn’t make it so we have a choice to watch or not to watch.:)P.S Don’t forget you are preaching to the converted on a specialist forum such as this,99.9% of the population are not on this forum of have an interest.
Bit of a generalisation- I’m 29 and watched it because I am a Spitfire/Hurricane/BOB enthusiast (and have been for as long as I remember) and I wouldn’t have cared who was presenting, but then I guess I am the exception! I agree that most 29 year olds are probably not as enthusiastic as I am on the subject.
Please could a mod fix the thread title to ‘seen’. Thanks!!
The cover was changed for the second duplication run of the DVD
Thanks for the info Steve.
Many thanks for the replies – I’ve placed an order for both!
