    Yorkie..?

…that reminds me. Back in the 1980’s I used to visit Dan Air’s base at Lasham. There used to be an old York mouldering-away on the grass outside… Whatever happened to it…? 🙂

    Gaping Hole.

One of the biggest gaps in the UK scene has to be the Typhoon/Tempest. They did an awful lot of significant work and vanished almost as soon as the war ended.
Of course, lack of airframes and parts aside, the Sabre is the major hurdle. However, unlike say, thirty years ago, we have masses of modern technology to assist.
There are getting to be very few people around now who have even heard a Sabre run, let alone fly…..
Now that we have the realistic prospect of a Mossie returning to UK skies, It’d be fantastic to see a project coming together for Hawkers big-hitters….:diablo:

    Clouston.

Clou’s account of flying back over the Alps in severe icing conditions makes sober reading for any pilot. Scary stuff. Makes one want to stick to ‘Wing Commanders weather’…! 😮

    Hangarage.

    …….
The notion that it has to taxy at all costs otherwise it isn’t ‘preserved’ strikes me as very strange. The Vulcan had serious corrosion found during its rebuild -there is still significant exposure to it whether an aircraft ground taxies or not.

As for her being just another ‘dead’ Vulcan if she is grounded and doesn’t taxy-the machine at Newark could be said to fit that broad description but it still regularily delights visitors as does the machine at Coventry. Maybe its time Vulcan enthusiasts focused on getting a long term roof over her head rather than short term ideas of trying to burn more Jet A1 in ground taxying.

As and when this aircraft ceases to be maintained to an airworthy standard, then it obviously makes sense to keep it ground-runable. Unlike some of the very poor examples scattered around the UK, this is the one best-maintained and thus best suited to ground-only operations. The costs are also incomparably lower than keeping it flying. Where I do agree with you is on the matter of housing. If the machine is simply left outside in the elements, then she’ll soon catch-up to all the other rust-buckets. Wherever she ends-up, she will require hangarage, as well as access to a runway ideally. Where that is is something that I have no opinion on. It does seem to me however, that the cost of a simple, clearspan building to house the machines is very small beer, compared to the current costs of keeping her flying. I can’t imagine, given the huge and highly laudable success so far, that there will be any great problem raising funds for hangarage.

    How Dare They.

Well, of course – that was the main purpose. Since the majority of donations came from either big sponsors or part-time aviation enthusiasts and full-time Vulcan enthusiasts their prime concern was to see her fly and as often as they could. It is not as though there are no Vulcans to be seen in museums.

Exactly. A fund raised to get a historic aircraft flying – succeeds. Shock-horror.

    Echoes On The Interwibble.

Now that’s just too profound for me – what is the connection between a Led Zeppelin track (slide guitar cover of country blues samples) and Vulcan XH588?

Ha, – that would be my quirky sense of humour, wondering if anyone was chilled-out, but sober enough to remember the track that refers to that turn of phrase…..:)

    Hats-Off To Roy Harper.

Jets are not my bag, however, I’m truly baffled by some of the really silly comments sometimes made against the Vulcan project. It’s been an amazing success and they should be roundly congratulated. They have proved all the naysayers and miserable Doubting Thomas’s totally wrong. Frankly it all smacks of ignorance and some sort of perverse sour grapes. What a strange species we Brit’s are. Would one hear this sort of stuff in the US, Oz or Kiwiland..? No chance….!
I can’t see any logic to the daft idea that she is somehow hoovering-up money that might be destined for other projects. I think she can certainly draw on public-support for being a national icon, that a pile of scrap from a bog – (Of a type that the Average Joe may never have heard of.) – could never achieve.
It won’t be flying much longer and I for one will make sure that I see her at least once before she’s finally grounded as a final reminder of the days when the UK actually had a real home-grown aviation industry. Hats-off to all the very dedicated folks who haven’t just talked about this, – but got-up off their backsides and done it, rather than just bashed-away at a PC. Respect.

    Chunky.

A read a quote many years ago, – time and senility obscure it’s origin which went like this;- ‘An experienced SEAC RAF Spitfire pilot was being shown around an American airbase and was shown the Jug and invited to sit in it. He marvelled at the sheer size, comfort, the armrests and ashtray. Upon exiting the machine he was asked by the American squadron commander what he thought of the Jug. “Wonderful!” he exclaimed, but it will never replace the aeroplane!”

For many years I thought the Jug was a big ugly lump, but I’ve actually rather come to like it now. It’s got so much presence, rather like the Bearcat and the ‘190. Chunky…:)

    Wise Words.

I saw MDFIMC when it came out. It was a real pleasure to watch it again a few weeks ago. JJH’s words about ‘Just babying along’ old a/c have always stuck with me. What a character and a great adventure.

Good. Is it still Bob’s..? I think he has a bit of a backlog for rebuilds…!:)

    ‘DW.

‘DW is an old Rothmans ‘2A. Bob Mitchell was using it for instruction in a green & white scheme in the late ’80’s/early ’90’s, based at Coventry. It’s been in long-term storage, pending rebuild for a long time.

    Perspective.

It’s fascinating to see the different views on threads like this. As far as airworthy a/c are concerned, the arguments are really very simple and well rehearsed.
It is true to say however, that with some recovered aircraft, for static display, it’s much harder to draw conclusions. I think that there is some confusion in many threads where ‘aviation’, and ‘history’ get confused with ‘hobbies’ (Read ‘obsessions’) and collecting etc – (More obsessions….and yes, we all participate to some degree.). Much talk too of ‘dioramas’ as if we are talking about Airfix toys, – or Disneyland.
If we take the complete and amazingly well-preserved (Well, until the Taliban got to play with it..) P-40, then it makes sense, both practically and economically, to restore it to it’s true glory, even if it never flies. That one is a no-brainer.
If we look at some of these wrecks from saltwater…….(Bear in mind the Halifax was a freshwater lake, so much, much kinder to the a/c.)…..then it’s fair to assume that the subject of this thread will be in a truly ghastly condition. A lot of the structure, such as remains, will probably fall apart during recovery. What will come ashore will be crumbling, corroded scrap. I think the corrosion-protection of the German a/c was better than the British, but looking at some of the video of the Dornier, it looks like it’s corroded to hell….
If folk want to see a real one, then they really need to get the drawings out and build one from scratch.
To be brutally honest, I think that the time, effort and money would be better spent of putting the Halifax back-up on it’s wheels. As a display piece, it pretty dismal. As the sole surviving Halifax in the UK, it probably deserves making into a better representation of a type that many fought – and died – flying. At least it has been preserved, so the option is there for the future, thus I’m pretty laid-back about it.

My guess is that, sooner or later, the Halifax will get restored to a reasonable static condition.

    That Clip.

Very often seen in documentaries about the BoB, there appears footage of a Spitfire chasing a Bf110. The Messerschmidt is seen to overfly the camera, followed closely by the Spit. I can’t be the only one who has spotted this.

Every time I see this I wonder where this footage came from? Perhaps war department trials using a captured Bf110?

    Any ideas?

    Elwick

Discussion of this clip came-up in another thread recently. I understand that the Me110 was part of the RAF’s collection of enemy aircraft for evaluation. The Spitfire was purported to have been flown by Bob Tuck, but I have no lead on the truth of that. The clip has been used countless times. During the war it was used in a well-know film about the ATA.
