One of the pictures shows it fitted to a Spitfire but I don’t think they were common fit for very long. The Spit usually had the Refelector gunsight I think. I don’t know any facts for sure though.
I think this is a component part of the Gyro Gunsight Mk1 made by Elliots. But I also have pictures showing it as Ref No 7A/1661.

They are not gyros or desynn motors but Torque Synchro Receivers these will receive a 3 line synchronous transmission from a transmitter somewhere (probably part of a gyro unit) and drive the indicator’s two main pointers but with only just sufficient torque/power to move them, not enough to operate any gearing or other devices.
You could try Smiths Industries themselves at both Bishops Cleeve and Basingstoke. Or maybe the MOD’s Post Design Support Officer at those places, assuming there is still that post in existance.
But it is labelled as 6A/NIV meaning “Not in Vocabulary” – the Vocab being the AP1086 Catalogue of RAF Equipment. So perhaps it is part of the carrier’s equipment rather than an aircraft’s equipment.
Voltmeter type C = 5A/1636, later 5C/1636
and take your pick of these possible ammeters:
Hope this helps

Could it be a box/cage for the carrier pigeons!
Fire Extinguisher list
Here is my list, so far. (attached “Word” document).
Please add some more or amendments, if I’ve got any wrong.
If you do get anymore detail on it, or indeed on any other types, could I request a copy of it, either on this thread or by PM, please.
Might I suggest that owners of aircraft, cockpits or even maunals try to determine the fire extinguisher types that are (or were) fitted to their aircraft type and then add them to this thread, to form a reference list for us all?
Terry
