Venom J-1712
Here is whats left of pod S211 which should probably be J-1712. But are there any photos of it prior to 2004?
Sorry – photos below!
The First ZK-VNM
Some scanned photos of ex-Swiss Venom Mk 1 J-1634 before its destruction. It was replaced by Mk 4 J-1719 but with the same registration.
8 Sqn Sharjah 1958
I think it had been raining in sunny Sharjah that day.
Original AP “Camera Copies”
Unlikely I would have thought. APs were/are usually produced by the most appropriate source, usually the manufacturer of the aircraft or equipment. The firm’s technical literature department may have kept originals whilst the AP was current. But as Crown material they were probably disposed of when the AP was declared obsolete. The RAF Museum have of course a collection of most APs but not the originals.
P8 Compass
The alpha numeric “6A” is the RAF Stores “Section” of the Vocabulary of RAF Equipment and 726 is its individual reference number in that catalogue. As I understand it 6A/726 was the reference number allocated to the Pilots Type Magnetic Compass Type P8.
And yes I would think it would have value to a collector, though if you like you could give it to me!
Alcohol substitutes
For flight use, fuels are often not really the clarity required and would not be certifiable. Also consider fumes, toxicity, and fire risk. A Tiger’s ceiling and that of many veteran/vintage aircraft, may mean that de-aeration is not so important in practice but again there is certification to consider.
For static use almost any clear spirit should be OK. Yes, I’ve suggested vodka before, too. Or Gin maybe, and though not drinkable, surgical spirit from the chemist may be acceptable.
Alcohol
It is/was pure absolute ethyl alcohol de-natured with 5% pure methanol. When the bowl is filled it is de-aerated by holding it at 28 In of vacuum for one and a half hours. Then topped up again.
Radiation:
Please note that compasses pre mod B/279 present a “minor” radiation hazard. Post mod they still contain slight raduioactivity. Removal of luminous paint should not be attempted.
Parts Lists & Overhaul Instructions
I have a parts list for the P11 compass (8 pages) including exploded view, and also for the “inverted type” the P12 (9 pages). I do also have overhaul instructions for the P12 (27 pages). Scanned at about 200 KB per page. PM me with your e-mail address if you’d like them.
Keep Looking Please
Somebody, somewhere must have taken a picture of it at some time! It was up for sale in Botany Bay at Chorley, Lancs for a while and noted as such in Wrecks and Relics. Please keep looking.
CD made. It’ll be in the post tomorrow,
Terry
I have the AP101B-0404-1A and 101B-0404-1B scanned as “jpg” files. Will both fit onto one CD.
I have scans of the pilots notes for the Mk1 though not the Mk 4. Also I have Swiss Flight Reference Cards in French and also in German.
