In order for MiG-25 to intercept SR-71 they must be perfectly positioned and guided to their target.

For MiG-31 though a margin of error is much much further. Its M=4.5 120km range R-33 in coupe with Zaslon will leave little chance for Blackbird to sirvive.

I think that a simple fact that RuAF abandoned brand new high-tech An-70 in favor of Il-76MF modernisation should tell something to somebody competent in this particulate debate.

    80’s 23MLD and 29 vs F-15 and F-16 (Mirage 2000).

Moment when AIM-120D and R-77M become operational (which should be soon) both Phoenix and R-33 will be totally obscolete. R-37, R-37M are different story however, but Su-30 can’t carry them and KS-172 is nowhere to be seen in the next decade.

The USSR could reach English Channel in 7 days even in late 80’s. Conventional armes disparity in Europe was huge. Brittanica’s yearly issue of 1988 give USSR 1.4 to 1 advantage in armes over entire NATO.

Question was related to military aviation alone. USSR had very capable designs but it was always trailing in time. For example by the time MiG-23MLD was in service it had to fight in BVR with F-15.

Probably the only time then soviets had little to fear is 1974-1978 when they amassed thousands of MiG-21bis plus MiG-23M. I am sure that in the soviet hands MiG-25 cold do some damage also.

What about speed then? Why all newer Flankers including latest Su-35 have lower top speed then old Su-27.
What perfomance advantages Su-35 have over Su-27?
