His attempted recovery of the B-29 stranded on the polar ice was truly epic
Well, yes and no!
The nose was recontoured during its last rebuild to more closely resemble the DB-engined ‘109G, while still retaining the Merlin.
It’ll look a bit like this – although not sure what scheme they’ll be going with for it.

Shame the Spanish did not make the Buchon look like this from the start…much better appearance and not dissimiliar to a BF109G
It must be four decades since I have seen this film,I have a vague recollection of one scene which featured a downed Bf110.Is my memory incorrect? or if not does anyone know if it was a genuine aircraft or a mock-up?
Regards Pete.
Not forgetting the Hispano-Suiza engine fitted to the Spanish aircraft initially…
Yes.off course,I guess that makes 6 in total…..surely a record that can not be broken.

Maybe even better than a Buchon?

It is interesting to compare the profiles of the first to the last, very similar ,being both fitted with upright engines. Let,s see…….RR Kestrel, DB601,DB605,Jumo 211,RR Merlin. That is five different engines fitted to the same airframe.Built in Germany,Poland, Chechoslovakia and Spain from 1935 to 1959 with around 35,000 constructed,Does anything else match this record?
Yes indeed -it was however forty years ago !
Would not a Buchon restored to 1969 BoB movie configuration and paint scheme be a correct historical representation in itself ?,that is in comparison to say a 1944 Russian winter appearance.
Beautiful photography,I especially love the B-24 diarama, many thanks.
Dart power
Yes thats interesting,I did see it at aero-tech at Toowoomba after Guido Zuccolli had purchased and was in the process of re- conversion to Merlin power. This was never comlpleted prior to being exported. Many thanks
