I hope that that is what you were thinking of. 🙂
Beautiful work Dean. Every time I look at them they look better and better! Stunning. Where were they taken? 🙂

the bit you are seeing at the end (the noisy bit) is the APU (auxiliary power unit). it is used to provide independent power on the ground which would usually come from a ground starter trolley or the main engines themselves. it is also used to start the engines. however, they arent switched on all the time.
there is no such thing as a stupid question! hope that helps!
Sam
Goff taught us well, didnt he?:D 😎
The APU, which is basically a turbine engine, will provide power for lighting, galley ovens power, air conditioning, and hydraulic pressure when the main engines are off.
Ive walked past a few parked up 747s at Heathrow and their APUs are very, very noisy.
Fantastic photos Si. Really vivid and sharp. 🙂
Having edited a countless number of photos over the past few days from my last LHR visits, I keep slightly changing my workflow, just a simple case of doing things in a different order or missing some things out entirely. I can’t work out which work flow is best.
Ive been playing around with levels and the histogram but Im not sure that what I do with it is entirely beneficial to the finished photo.
All very interesting though and the replies to the thread have helped loads, thanks guys.
Thanks for the comments guys!
Adam,
Some great images, I love the b&w shot, the Jordanian 343 and the 757 overhead shots are superb….well done. Are you shooting in raw or jpeg? All the best
Si
Si, cheers for the comments; I would like to shoot RAW, but I dont have the right software to handle them, and each RAW file is 21mb on the E-400, which would mean I could only take around 150 shots using 3gb of cards. 😡
🙂
the malaysian was from Tesco but I don’t like the angles you get there.
The rest were from elsewhere 😉
And there I was for a minute thinking that I had finally found your shooting location. GGRRRR. 😡 :p
Stunning shots. Absolutely beautiful. 😎 You really are the master of these 09R climb out shots. Are they taken just by Tesco’s?
I wonder if Lonely Planet tourist guidebooks will be updated. “Be weary of smoking toilets”.

Wow. What a difference a change in the metering mode makes! Certainly the best shots you have ever produced, Sam! 🙂 😎
Excellent shots! I really like the Gulf Air; very nice indeed!
