It’s certainly no Walrus class…
IMHO it’s a toy for some movie… It looks quite small. Sankt-Petersburg doesn’t have a red underwater part, nor does she have such torpedo tubes. The tubes do look like some Russian ones, the 533mm tubes on Akula class SSN have such torpedo hatches.
Doesn’t look like taken in Russia. considering the building and the place on which the sub is put… Strange it is, Hyper is not the only one scratching his head at the moment 😉
edit: it’s no Zwaardvis sub either, the conning tower has different windows and the three black things can’t be found there either…
I suppose I’ll stay with my idea that it’s for a movie or something. Who would put a submarine on such a car, next to a building in the middle of nowhere? Doesn’t seem to have a slipway around it either…
The two pictures Hypie posted do show the same submarine, they do have the same conning tower! But where and when…
It does look like a Scorpene…

Haha, of course not!!! What did I just say: First time I saw here Kashtans fully armed, meaning with those missiles!!!
I mean the bars on the basis of the module. Would it be for stability? It might have something to do with the reloading system too, although you can’t find them on the pictures Wanshan posted in the P15A thread either. The Kashtans on Talwar have those supports too. Well, I suppose they are just there to support the module, or to give it less stress on the bearing. I mean the perforated things… Don’t know, they seem not to be supporting on the floor either… Maybe a cooling system?
Surface combattants don’t stand a chance against this ship in such a battle, the only US could take it out is with submarines or with a large part of a Carrier Air Wing.
1.0pk????
Velikiy has been busy quite a lot Steve, it’s not always mentioned, but she really is active. Remember when she was called back to port by Kuroyedov? She was on practice too then… She was on practice in the Baltic this summer, in the Atlantic too. and more of that.
She seems to be armed fully now. First time I see her with the Kashtans having their missiles too. They seem to have changed the Kastans a bit too.
As you can see, these don’t have the “bars” on the sides of the module (don’t know what they serve for). And have a different colour, but I suppose that can be changed very rapidly.
This picture was taken while still in building yard, so I suppose the Kashtans weren’t ready yet.
Pete, the gun is in the back, it will give no problem, since the bridge is about 200m in front of the gun. And if the explosion of the gun hits that part, I don’t think there’s anymore need for a captain or crew, since then she will be quite lost anyway. That is also the reason why she carries a certain armor I suppose. The part you see behind the gun (or in front, considering the real front and back of the ship), is the helicopter operations command tower, not the bridge.
hmm how come? He states in another topic that “Velikiy might be as effective as an Aegis cruiser when fully equiped”. I’m sure it is already this effective, I’ll even say more: It can whoop that Aegis cruiser’s ass without a problem.
And it has a more decent ASW and ASuW capability.
It’s one of my favorites too, has a TV-studio, fitness room for 200 people, sauna, swimming pool etc. Although I consider it too large and know more-nice-looking ships…
Udaloy…
Maybe you can buy my model of her. For, let’s say $100??? :diablo:
That mammoth is even armoured so it’s probably quite robust. US estimates it may need as many as 5 Harpoon hits to kill it, now after seeing all this equipment, what is the amount of missiles you think you have to fire to get 5 hits???
“turnabout????”
Anyway some more of these:
Turnbuckles
chackles
Dunnage

Fregat, together with Cross Sword for the guidance of Kinzhal on Neustrashimy and Udaloy
Fregat together with Orekh on Sovremenny
Top Pair and Fregat with Top Dome on Kirov and Slava, together with a bunch of other systems for the other SAMs. Including Cross Sword on Velikiy (for Kinzhal)and Pop Group on Slavas for OSA-MA.
So basically, they don’t have everything netted, they always need additional radars for the guidance of their SAM systems.
It has its advantages too though.
Yes, but it indicates that they really do know about it.
Admiral Ushakov (back then), the first unit of the Kirov class was laid down in 1974, the “bare” design incorporates this kind of stealth too. So, I assume they have been busy with it for some time before they started building that ship.
Maybe I should add some things.
Velikiy can not take on a CVBG single handedly, but she does evoque an action from a CVBG, this on itself is equally good when you can use it in your strategy.
She was designed to cooperate with Kuznetsov and the rest of the fleet though. To protect the SSBNs.
As for the large fleet and “if it really happens it will be the saddest part for a Navy whose reach and capability was second to none during the Soviet Days.”
This is not a good way of thinking. A country should not look at its history, it should look at its current state and its primary concerns. As I already indicated, these concerns do not justify a huge navy with large ships, nor does their budget allow that.
It would be much better to invest less in their fleet and more in their economy. Their primary concern for the near future on the Navy part is not really their fleet itself, it’s the designers. They have a huge lack of new designers and the ones that do graduate, don’t have the experience as the former ones did and mostly don’t choose to become a Naval architect in Russia because they can earn a lot more money in other businesses and other countries.
So, it would be better to invest some more money in the shipbuilding industry first.
And for the large ships. I haven’t seen their large ships hunt any US submarine for some time, so what’s the need for these 7 large overcrewed Udaloys (yes in some way for the future Chinese threat maybe, but even then, the Udaloys will be long gone before that threat becomes serious enough to justify them)? Wouldn’t it be better to get some more smaller ships with helicopters and more modest weapons to fend off the Chinese fishing vessels in their EEZ in the meanwhile?
I may be a VERY LARGE supporter of this Navy, but I’m realistic and will keep supporting them, even if they choose to scale down a bit.
GPS has been jammed, but only at short range. That was during a Greek tender for a new tank. The French had put a jammer somewhere near the battlefield when the US Abrams tanks and British ChallengerII were doing the test. Yet they did quite bad, since their GPS was out…
I don’t know how this kind of jammers would work against bombs, since it’s only at short range and I suppose the bomb can just fly through…
They just make a model, like they do for testing the sailing characteristics in a towing tank…
There is no new idea for any destroyers yet.
About this stealth, it was entirely built as a stealth ship. Once a RN officer said, when you see a wake with no ship in front of it on your radar, you have found yourself a Kirov.
Indeed, on structure this seems to be right. Yet of course, the weapons and sensors aren’t very RCS-reducing… I don’t think she’s stealthy, but that isn’t this necessary for this ship. If any Navy knows this thing is in its area, I’m sure that will stop them from having bad ideas for some time. Huge target for sure, but even more huge defenses to counter and there’s little that will be capable of countering these defenses. Harpoon??? I don’ t think so…
I’m a big fan of this change in thinking. Why would they invest in a large surface fleet anyway? A huge waste of money. They don’t have any obvious enemies to counter this fleet, only terrorists in Chechniya, where the fleet is quite useless. And maybe some fishers or drug smugglers at sea, but you don’t really need a Sovremenny or Kirov to counter those. They could be as stupid as USN, who put the Ticonderoga in drug busting ops. Afterwards they said it was really good at this. I’m sure it was, but do you really need Aegis and SM-2 for such operations? I’m sure a corvette with a helicopter could have done that same job with the same amount of succes and with that for a MUCH cheaper price (their debts don’t seem to be their problem?)
Everyone nowadays is against US, but why? Because they use such a large fleet, if Russia doesn’t have such a large fleet, then we’re sure they won’t abuse it.
These new frigates and corvettes really suffice for their immediate needs. The SSBN and SSN force ensures them no major power will try to attack them. The follow on of Sovremenny was Sovremenny II, which the Chinese Navy is getting. With 2 Kashtan instead of the AK-630 and a full-time hangar, not the telescopic type. Otherwise there were/are no ideas for such large vessels.

hmm
Have a couple too:
Shrubbery is indeed one of them
and lots of words used on ships: Sockets, flange, compasskey (sounds simple, but in fact is 1.5m high and weighs 50kg+ (100lbs+) gives you a completely wrong idea of what you have to go and get),
moron
hence
That’s about it. “Hence” is one of the words I use most I suppose…
