    HMAS Canberra

Glenn, the HMAS Canberra did come to Bombay for the International fleet review there last year. Apparantly all the crew came for the India – Australia cricket test match which Australia won. They were lucky they did not see the remaining 2 matches as Australia lost them. !

    Delhi class destroyer

    Tomel,

currently there are three Delhi class destroyers:

INS Delhi, INS Mysore and INS Mumbai . You can get more info abt them at http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/NAVY/Delhi.html

As an improvement on the Delhi class there will be three more Project 15 A Bangalore class destroyers built. These are more advanced than the Delhi class vessels.

You are right they are pretty good ships and I have had the good fortune of going aboard INS Delhi 🙂

    RE: All time favourite Movie???

I just love that guy Mel Brooks !!

I have seen his ” History of the World ” atleast 25 times and still double up with laughter. Also his movie ” Space Balls ” and one more about a guy in Nazi occupied Poland ( i forget the name )

Also a great Walther Mathau movie called “Hopscotch” is one of my fav’s.

Peter Sellers and the Pink Panther series is great. His movie Party is another rib tickler.

Other fav’s that ome to mind now :

    – Great Dictator
    – Silence of the Lambs
    – Untouchables
    – JFK
    – City of Joy
    – Saving Pvt. Ryan

    Crap War Movies

Jag , U are right, Pearl Harbour the movie was the biggest piece of crap I have ever seen, and the hype they made of this film – unbelievable. I actually played hookey from work to see the flick !!

I was also very dissapointed with Enemy at the Gates. It was a great story – the showdown between Zaitsev and Koenig. What dissapointed me were the historical inaccuracies in the movie – example the scene where Koenig shoots Zaitsevs friend when he was jumping over that parapet – impossible shot !. Also there was no kid spying on Koenig and the last sequence where Zaitsev shoots Koenig is wrong. koenig was hiding under an asbestos/ metal sheet when Zaitsev shot him, after selling koenig a dummy.

I dont mind a fictional war story in a movie, but if its based on a true story, it damm well be made exactly as that.

I generally dont like the movies made between the 60’s – 80’s the general theme is the allies are the good guys and the krauts not worthy of the bullets that got them. Any allied soldier that gets killed dies after giving a few tear jerking sentences, whereas the krauts get swatted like flies. An exeption in this for me was ” A Bridge too far” and “Operation Daybreak”.

I ask again does anyone know where to get the sound track of Operation Daybreak: Please let me know if you do.

    RE: FW-190A-5 in Japan.

I guess it would have been been too expensive / technically complex for the resource strapped Japanese to bring into production a new type of a/c which was not markedly superior to anything in allied use.

I guess towards the end the Japs were trying to get a miracle a/c to give them a chance against the US. Also due to the petrol shortage in Japan, a lot of Jap planes were flying on an adultrated fuel called “ten-go”, not sure if the FW-190 could fly on that.

Just some reasons off the top of my head.

    RE: A Georgian scenario

The US reaction is obviously going to depend on how bad it wants access to that oil and to what extent it will go to get it. In the face of full scale Russian resistance, IMO the US will back down, especially if body bags start coming home and the Russians can mount an effective proporganda campaign about US “greed” etc.

The US will not risk an armed confrontation with the Russians in that region, simply because they will not have a frontline nation to base themselves. Further, NATO will not really support them as their interests are not involved and they will always have to live with Russia on their borders.

The past few years has shown that the US policy for military solutions starts with getting the backing and sanction of the world community ( a reason they are still hesitating to attack Iraq). I dont see the world nodding its assent at a dangerous spiral.

The US has taccitly agreed that the former CIS states are Russia’s backyard and I see the Russians safeguarding their interests to the full.

RE: What makes you proud of your country?

Well as an Indian what makes me proud:

    a. Our unity in diversity, lets face it we are already what the EU aspires to be – many countries in one living harmoniously.

    b. Huge levels of tolearance. Personally as a Zorastrian, we are indebted to India for the shelter they provided my people and prevented us from being exterminated and giving us the opportunity to prosper and live in peace.

    c. Indians despite their callousness and indiscipline are by and large warm people.

    d. Our culture and family values.

    e. Our food.

    f. Our armed forces.

What I dont like is a longer list ( lol )

RE: DO YOU BELIEVE IN GOD?

I believe in God, I dont believe in following any organised Religion !!

I make that distinction because religion is a man-made system that dictates a way of life by following certain rituals, the fear of God being a “punishment” for not adhereing to these rules. God doesnt need “agents” to do his work. Acknowledging him

I feel that if you are mature enough, you can devise your own way of living without having to follow customs or traditions.

For me God is a benovelent energy, not an old man sitting on some cloud, performing miracles to show people that he exists. His presence in my mind gives me hope and great mental peace. That for me is God.
