As an operator, the fuel price rise has an impact but it really is quite small in comparison to everything else. Fuel and oil are some of the cheaper parts of operating a vintage aircraft or warbird and make up perhaps only 20% or so of the costs. Its insurance, overhaul or replacement costs (engine in particular), annual/periodic/unforseen maintenance, hangarage that are the killers. Flight insurance is always on the rise and accounts for approx 4%/annum here in NZ (not sure about the UK or elsewhere) so if we are talking of a warbird worth 1.5million the insurance is $$$$$. Overhaul costs are high based on numerous things but it is a similar story as the maintenance, the per hour charge out rate is going up and up and it is very time consuming to maintain an aircraft regardless of type.

Flying is not particularly cheap at the best of times and it only gets worse and worse, but fuel is really just one of a fairly big handfull of problems.

Still, must keep flying as its just too much fun. Better to die broke and happy than rich and bored senseless…….

Hello to all, particlularly Barry and JDK.

Tis I, the offending Tiger pilot in question. I still often do a falling leaf as an opener to my display routine and I used it in my freestyle sequence as mentioned by JDK and Barry at the Aero’s competition at Woburn in 2005.

I will have to own up a little though, it was not me performing the Tiger display at Omaka this year (would have been nice though, but at least I was flying something). The pilot of the display was Dave Phillips who normally can be seen cavorting around in a Hawker Hunter here in NZ ,also owner of Tiger Moth ZK-BSN.

For those who visit this way ever please stop by at Croydon Aircraft Co. and I will show you around.

    Cheers, Ryan

Sorry to those interested in this thread for not posting any photographs once we had the aircraft flying.

I managed to get some pilots notes relating to the MkI through MkIII, and from that things went well. The aircraft flew extremely well (leaves a MkV for dead as well as a lot of more modern machines) and now has approx 25 hours under its wings.

I will post some shots in the next day or two and see what the general thoughts are.

I understand you have been in contact with us at Croydon Ross, I’m sure we can help and will be in touch in due course with drawings and/or photographs, pretty sure we have drawings though (I’ll see what the boss says).

Andy, I and I’m sure many others here, would be interested for you to put down a list of what you deem to be good cinema, accurate or whatever you judge by.

Its just a movie, made by a man who enjoys movies and now he has a bit of clout and a bit of money can make movies that he wants to make, not what others want him to make. The films Peter has done in the past and will continue to do in the future are ones that interest him and stirred his thoughts over numerous years.

Everyone get a grip, its just a movie. And it will be good in so many ways. Even if the Lancaster doesnt have the exact number of rivets its supposed to, or the correct colour fin flash to the nth shade, or the correct tire pressures, or the right colour upholstery on the seats.

If it annoys you dont watch it, quit winging and wining. Go do something constructive…..

    Not to be rude, but.

Has anyone thought that the reason Peter is making the movie is simply because he wants to.

Along with King Kong, Dambusters is a film Peter vividly remembers as a young boy and stuck with him. Now he has the money, resources and time he makes the movies he wants to make.

More power to him, and who cares if its not as good as the original (personally I think it will be a heck of a lot better), its his movie and he can do it how he likes.

I for one will go to see it as it will undoubtedly be a good yarn.

Thanks for posting the ATA notes Atcham Tower.

As to the front windscreen on the Proctor, it may not be the original for the aircraft (the original being the curved/round type), of which we still have the original and several others, but the angular design was available as an option as I understand from Percival particularly for aircraft to be used in racing.

Anyone feel free to correct me if Im wrong, but it was a little verbal information I have come across whilst doing research, I have seen nothing in print to confirm this but it seems a feasible idea.

    Hi everyone,

The aircraft hasnt flown as of yet due to delays with the permit to fly from NZ CAA, but we are only a few days away I would imagine.

I will post some first flight shots as soon as it does.

This Proctor has the slanted front windscreen as well as different rear windows which essentially makes it a Vega Gull, as mentioned above there isnt a lot between the earlier models other than seating configuration.

The only reason I have been asking for Proctor 1 handling notes is not for the test flying its purely to keep CAA happy about their being no differences essentially between the earlier models so we can get a official flight manual done (it can be difficult convincing them.

I will be test flying the machine very soon and I will give you a run down on what its like (comparing with the Proctor 5), Ill post some pictures, and perhaps a short video clip.

    Heres a teaser anyway…….

Just for information the aircraft is mechanically finished but cosmetically not, the registration is temporary and still needs to be added full span on the wings, there is a little sign writing to do on the cowls (maybe Castrol insignia) and there may be a Kings Cup emblem on the tail, more polishing, more polishing, more polishing, more polishing etc etc

    Thanks Mark,

I have come across some Proctor I & II notes by chance today, but would definately welcome anything you come across. Would be interesting to hear what Leigh has to say as he was instrumental in acquiring this particular Proctor if Im not mistaken.
