The Comet will at this time be similar to the US machine, the US Comet has washout induced to eliminate the tip stalling tendency (but from what I here it hasnt really changed things that much) but I dont think it has a different airfoil section to the original.
We will try and keep the cockpit as original as we can (with very little to go on its kind of difficult) with no modern instrumentation if at all possible.
The undercarriage will be based on a modern retract with modern brakes to improve ground handling.
All of the above mods along with anything else done will be to make the aircraft something which is usable, from the outside represents a significant piece of aviation history which can be showed on a regular basis at airshows etc etc, but will be a much more useable aircraft so as not to sit in the back of a hanger for most of its life.
At present it will be a fairly long term project, but I am hoping to move things along a bit, as you can imagine it is a bit of a money pit but I think quite worth it in the long term.
As promised, some shots of the Comet replica.
Hopefully we will be doing a little more work on it in the near future.
I am under the impression that the replica in the US has changed hands recently and have been trying to get hold of the owner (unsuccessfully), if someone could give me a contact it would be great, the people at Wings of History dont seem to answer any emails and this was the last to have a connection.
The aircraft in question is a DH88 Comet replica as suggested, and the pic that Dave is refering to on the RNZAF forum show it with a Dragon Rapide behind.
I will attempt to take some shots and post them tomorrow for everyone to look at, would have done it sooner but have been a little busy having fun in England (playing with aircraft of course!!) so will sort some out ASAP….
I could be completely wrong (I usually am) but it looks like it may be part of the baffles around the cylinders (possibly DH).
The second pic looks like the hinged area that would normally have a pin through it.
Ill take a picture tomorrow for you so you can see what I mean.
As for knowing if its DH60X, I cant really help and it may be very difficult to know unless there is a serial number on the part (which seems unlikely).
Ill see what I can find…
Will be great to see how the Hornet is going.
International Tiger Moth Aerobatics competition this year, practice day at Old Warden with competition held Friday and Saturday at Woburn.
Thought I would add this to the mix, the aircraft was included in the photo by accident.
It was recently sent to me, courtesy of a chap by the name of LeRoy Zimmerman (from Alaska), as it is one of the aircraft I operate.
Please visit LeRoy’s website for some stunning panoramic photographs, not of aircraft but stunning none the less
Have you got the flight back to Oz planned, should make for an interesting trip.
When abouts are you heading away to pick it up?
I would imagine it is going to be very expensive….new wing would be in order I think.
Dont think I would be too happy flying it with a charred front and rear spar (glue failures etc etc) but it is hard to tell the damage from the pics, but still most probably a new wing.
The Rapide is known to have this type of thing happen from time to time.
Having the exhaust there doesnt help…….especially if there is a little unburnt fuel around after start-up.
Its a bit more than a fabric recovering methinks.
Our thoughts are with all those that have been affected by the terrible events today.
Still living at Wanaka.
Along with the nice new Yak.
There is quite a Russian contigient at Wanaka now, including the remaining Polikarpov’s.
Oh I do like Russian Fighters……… 😀
It was the two Gold Coast machines up for sale, not sure what the story is (I’m all confused now).
Ill find the ad, perhaps the website is out of date, not sure.
Perhaps someone else can fill us both in, maybe ‘setter’ knows a bit more.
Not sure on the engine bearer use, possibly.
It makes for extremely light parts.
Have emailed the company and I’ll see what comes back, if its of use I will post it here also.
Just for info the on a number of drawings I have it is referred to as “Electron” with a C so not sure if the trade name has changed, its probably the same stuff though.
Thanks for the info, I had a feeling someone here would at least be able to point me in the right direction.
