Mirage 4000, lost to ( ??? ) but it sure is a shame

AFAIK it lost to a hiccup in the price of crude oil.

(hence to a hiccup in the solvency of the petromonarchies who were the target market)

    – Unguided rockets – S-5 M/K, carried in UB-16-57 / UB-32-57 rocket launchers and
    – Single large caliber rockets S-24.

…which to me sounds slightly more than just a new cockpit.

Actually the Ethiopians always used their Mig-23s mostly in the ground attack role because the Mig-21’s payload, range and number of hardpoints are really abyssimal.

Silly me, I thought they were really Abyssinian…

I don’t know about the -2000/Lancer upgrade much like the Mig-29 Sniper upgrade. They seem to be perely cockpit upgrades and nothing else.

As in “no radar upgrade”, for example ?
    You would really think so?

Has anybody seen pictures of these aircraft in magazines or online? There is plenty of Lancer and Bison pictures but I have only seen photos of the MiG-21-2000 demonstrator.

Any pointers to more pictorials of operational MiG-21-2000 aircraft, in print or online, would be appreciated.

    Like this one?

    Low Flying

Tell me, is it a requirment in South America to Fly that low? They must be the only place in the world that allows that low a hight and in formation too!

Man, that’s what a small budget does to you.
I costs a lot more to buy engines powerful enough to fly higher.

    😀

    Katanga Fougas – Correction

In my too quick reply to Erez I wrote that the Katangan Fougas came from Belgium. This is wrong.

Indeed Belgium sent Fougas to Congo during the colonial rule, but they withdrew those at independence.
After Katanga claimed its indep in turn, it ordered new Fougas directly from the Potez-Fouga company. So the AviKat machines actually came from France.

Now some unidetified SF-260 sporting partially French (?) and partially strange markings.. Could be some kind of Italy?

If I am not mistaken, N401FD is a SIAI Marchetti SF.260D from the Burundi Air Force.

…and thus it does not belong in this “never flew” thread, but instead in the “small airforces” thread. 🙂

That thread ROCKS, by the way. Check it at

    Ex-Israeli Magisters

    Erez,

the father of one of my friends was a pilot in the IDF/AF. He was part of an Israeli pilots team that trained pilots in Congo to fly the Fougas that were given to them by Israel.

Your friend has probably mixed up Congo and Uganda. AFAIK Israel sold 14 Magisters to Uganda but none to Congo. (but willing to learn otherwise!)

Those planes were returned to Israel in 1976. Maybe as apology after op Jonatan?

Israel also sold some Magisters to El Salvador.

Pics of all those would be nice 🙂

What is the origin of Katanga’s Fougas? French? German? Israeli?

    Belgium.
And by the way BME330 is right, Katanga got originally 3 fougas.
But one had engine problems and never took off. An other one crashed.

The third one routed a Ghurka unit, caused the surrender of an Irish battalion, straffed the airports and destroyed several UN transports, and generally kept the whole United Nations forces at bay for months.

All this with one lieutenant as a pilot. One wonders what would have happened if this Deulin guy was more senior: would the UN have surrendered to Katanga? 😀 😀 😀

(It was finally destroyed on the ground by Canberra bombers)

BTW, the father of one of my friends was a pilot in the IDF/AF. He was part of an Israeli pilots team that trained pilots in Congo to fly the Fougas that were given to them by Israel.

Hey! does your friend have pictures from dad? 😀
