The next challenge is a live military operation.
    Who what where when?

It looks like a mix between a Chaika L-42 and an Aerovolga La-8.
I can’t quite find one with both the single T-tail and the taildragger undercarriage.

    Chris,

this is an AQM-38 target drone, developed from the XKD4R after Northrop bought Radioplane.
There were over 2,000 AQM-38 / RP-76 / RP-78 produced, and I’ll leave it to someone with more information than me to find the service and serial.

    (‘sides, I’m travelling and couldn’t propose a new quizz 🙂 )

I think the essential sentence is ‘Louis Bécherau entra aux Etablissements Bernard’. The Bernard factory appears to have been built in 1917, but as to the actual company registration, etc, I think we would have to have the book interpreted by a Francophone !

Knowing how contentious this forum can occasionally get, I am happy to receive information to the contrary !

    Thanks, Wilkofife.
Hmm, lessee: I am francophone, originally born in France. I am not trying to be contentious. And I appreciate the constructive spirit.
I was not around for WW1. (I am getting to be a certified aulde phart, so say my family, but only back to guerre d’Algérie, 6dw and ykw.)

what my question was about: I suspect that there is a shortcut and maybe a mixup in the text from the author: “entra aux Etablissements Bernard’, sure, in 1917-1918 that’s the Etablissements Adolphe Bernard. That company was licence-building SPADs. It used the acronym “AB” during ww1, then SIMB postwar, then in 1927 Société des Avions Bernard – SAB. My only point here is : in 1917-1918, Bernard had Etablissements called AB, nothing called “SAB” (yet).
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9_des_Avions_Bernard

It was founded in April 1917 by Adolphe Bernard as Etablissements Adolphe Bernard to licence-built SPAD fighters. Immediately after the war the company was reorganised as Société Industrielle des Métaux et du Bois (“SIMB”) to cover a wider product range. It built no new aircraft until 1922, when an aircraft division was formed with Jean Hubert as head designer. The company was bankrupt in 1927 but Bernard re-formed it a last time under the name Société des Avions Bernard to build a small production run of airliners for CIDNA but was out of business again before the French aviation industry was nationalised in 1935.

The only SAB that was around in 1918 was Société des Ateliers Béchereau. That company built a fighter called Béchereau SAB C.1:

Again: I’m not being contentious, I’m trying to reconcile inconsistencies. I suspect the SAB of 1918 was Société des Ateliers Béchereau, not yet the Société des Avions Bernard. The people involved are indeed those mentioned, only the name of company is IMO the subject of a too-quick conflation by a much-later author.

Thanks for bearing with a certified aulde phart trying to ride his hobby-horse.
Back to our regularly-scheduled puzzle thread: I have no clue what RAB’s latest offering is.

The “SAB” of this plane is the Société des Ateliers Béchereau, not the Société des Avions Bernard which was created under this name only in 1927, following-on to SIMB and to Etablissements Adolphe Bernard.
In my references, this plane is the Béchereau SAB C-1 built by Société des Ateliers Béchereau.

Anyone can shed some light or comment?

Do you know this site? Not Syria, but Lebanon.
    http://crimso.msk.ru/Site/Crafts/Craft31860.htm

Interesting entry. The English commentary says Lebanon, but the Russian text “Страна: Ливия” means “Country: Libya” 😮

LR-AAP is indeed listed as a D.S. No1 Papillon in the Lebanese registry of civil aviation pre-independence. Lebanon and Syria were both under the French Mandat du Levant then.
Now what does DS stand for? Probably somebody’s initials.
