    AA’s suggestion

In answer to AA’s suggestion, here is the next quizz.
I’ll be interested to hear what conclusions get “drawn from that” πŸ™‚

1930s in UK are not my forte, so this is slightly more modern:
Like AA’s last entry, the questions are not what, but where (which airfield) and when (year and month is enough).
    http://i42.servimg.com/u/f42/11/22/36/37/wotpla10.jpg

Again the key is the surroundings rather than the aircraft itself.
(the light circle at lower left is an artefact, a website’s logo which would give it away)

1st clue: rather dramatic occasion, pretty unlikely circumstances.

… invite dan_pub to post the next ‘wot plane’ image. That way we’ll see what he considers to be ‘obscure’ and ‘elitist’. I, for one, will find that most interesting.

OK, I’ll answer. But I’ll cease the discussion if turns to personal attacks again. (you AA haven’t, but enough others have)

Since you ask, yes indeed I consider that a quizz which depends so heavily on very-local-British clues such as the shape of a hill in the South Downs, or as the Long Man of Wilmington, is rather oscure and clique-ish.
Not everyone here is British, and for foreigners, …

Would you consider it fair is someone asked to recognize the occasion based on the topology in this photo? It is very unique, in the north of the country.

Actually it is so unique that most people in the country could tell the exact day.
Would this be of general interest, or just for a limited circle?

Back to the orignial subject: yes, for future, I’d prefer if the quizzes were less geared to an “old boys” circle and more open to the general population. Can we discuss it without going personal or unpleasant?
    Pros and cons welcome.

I am going to post a quizz as you suggest, in a separate post.

    Hmm…
Are we sure that those cute Rutan thingies qualify as Cold war era?
    Methink not quite.

    Gravesend, Kent?
That would be 9-Feb 1939, though.

    Nice change.

I didn’t get the impression that it was meant critically towards one or more participants in this thread

Absolutely correct. Was not meant as anything personal.
Even with one poster’s repeated attempts at making it personal & unpleasant, I’m still interested only in improving the thread.

Based on my experience of the respective thread in the German “Flugzeugforum.de”

Can you give a link to that thread, please?

somebody proposed to have separate threads: one for “beginners” … and one for “pros”

I’ve been thinking along those lines as well, but haven’t found a workable solution yet.

One idea I’ve been toying with is to base the level on a minimum threshhold of production. Planes that had at least XX copies produced vs one-offs. There could be different threads for planes that had at least, say, 50 copies produced (sounds kinder than ‘for beginers’ :D), for planes produced 5-to-50 copies, etc.
The top-level could be for one-off mods of planes hand-made in someone’s backyard and the other arcane that make the cognoscenti tick.
    What does everyone think?

Regarding the rules: In flugzeugforum the thread is re-started every year (January 1) and the first post always contains the rules

Good ideas. One rule I’d like to see myself is that after the plane is identifed, the photo should be posted again not-doctored. Chance to improve my database and knowledge πŸ˜€

ods: can one of you advise me on this? How can we get this as a “sticky”?

Don’t think it’s possible to have in-thread stickies. Only in the forum’s thread catalog.
The best I’ve seen in threads is to edit the 1st post, stick your rules in it, and change the title to “The Wot plane thread – READ 1st POST” or somesuch.
Then it is probably necessary that Mr_Creosote does it himself, as he is the author of that post.

The F.36/34 Hawker High-Speed Monoplane prototype K5083, in November 1935.

Apparently the words obscure elitism were a little too close to home for some. Oh well. If anyone thinks that the ensuing sarcastic behavior disproves them, maybe they can think again.

No harm intended, just a description of what I saw happening over some months. Is it a pity that a good thread got progressively appropriated by a few and snuffled? For me yes. Probably not for the few.
Obviously not for those who are happy with it and prepared to fight back to keep it. Goes with the style, too.

This thread was fun while it lasted. That’s something. There will be other opportunities, elsewhere.

If it helps, I’ve looked back over the past three months of this thread and the ‘regular players’ seem to be: [snip]

It certainly did not help keep more players in, that the thread went into increasingly obscure elitism.
It is rather a pity that things turned out that way.
