A holidaymaker died after suffering a heart attack on a flight to Florida from Newcastle Airport.
Members of the crew and passengers battled to save the 62-year-old after she took ill shortly after take-off on Saturday.
My Travel flight MYT051 was over the Atlantic when captain Ian Ross announced he was turning back to the nearest UK airport to seek urgent medical attention for the woman.
The aircraft, with more than 300 passengers on board, was diverted to Glasgow.
The woman was taken to Royal Alexander Hospital, in Glasgow, in an ambulance and her distraught husband was taken away in a police car.
She suffered a heart attack, although it is understood she had no history of heart problems.
Shocked holidaymakers were later informed the woman had died.
Chronicle reporter Linda Richards was on the flight. She said: “We were watching the movie when the captain came over the intercom. He said there was a medical emergency at the back of the plane and asked if there was a doctor or nurse on board who could help.
“I later heard two people, a retired nurse and another health worker, had responded. They fought to keep her alive for an hour.”
A spokesman for My Travel said: “A passenger had a cardiac arrest and a decision was taken to divert and seek medical attention. Our crew gave her CPR for one hour before she was transferred to hospital.”
