Do you mean the visibility at high AoA approach ?

Tailplane blanking by the main wing at certain AoA looks like a real possibility

I have been sketching several different racer or record attempt planes in the Nevada based site http://www.aafo.com.

I have two designs that if thoroughly investigated, built and engineered could come out as winners.

Naturally this is way beoynd my budget, but is there anyone with a spare Merlin and means to take the second step on either of these designs ? They are a for large part team work with online people at aafo.com.

Do you want to know more about them ?

For comparison also a F8F-2 is drawn beside them ( Rare Bear we all know right ? ).

Can see a potential for less than favourable AoA characteristics on Tigershark II

The Firefly, Gannet, and Early vampires among others used the same seat design.

Much more likely to be a Firefly seat by dint of where it is, i.e in Australia.

We never used Gannets and our Vampires/Sea Venoms were AFAIK all bang seat equipped, whereas the RAN did make use of a reasonable number of Fireflies.

Looks more like a Firefly seat to me

Nah… you are all too late! – that movie is already in development! Hollywood is gonna make it using Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson…

But they gonna use B-52 instead of the old tin triangle… and since no American has ever heard of the Falklands, they decided to change the target slightly to somewhere in the middle east… Also they are going to change the timeframe slightly so they can have Pres. Obama giving them the ‘GO’ codes, oh, and for a love interest, the gonna get Paris Hilton to see the good ‘ole boys off from their base… not from Waddo, but from Area 51!

    cynical?… moi?…

I’ll get my coat as someone here says!

Paris Hilton has been assigned a new role, shes making a special appearance as FOD that gets ingested on takeoff

The blue empennaged aircraft does bear a striking resemblance to a Brit,

What do you reckon they are Postfade?

Not an aircraft story but an unusual engine use one.

There was a water pumping station in Ballarat, Australia driven by two WW 1 era J-Class diesel submarine engines, i cant remember the exact location although i do know that both engines are still in place and one is still regulary run, not bad for a 90+ year old diesel that was last rebuilt in 1922!

Another one was an island in Port Philip Bay having an entire J-Class sub tied up at the jetty for many years after theyre withdrawal from service in the mid-late 1920’s for use as a power station! IIRC that sub was eventually scuttled somewhere in the bay.

    1. English Electric Lightning F.MK 2A, easily the best performer of the lot.

    2. Vickers Valiant

The BSA Bantam engine was from DKW, I think.

Quite a long time ago I worked with a chap who was getting old. During the war he built DH Mosquitoes. He told me the early ones used adhesives from Germany !

I think the Russians got their swept wing ideas for the MiG-15 from the Germans.

Then there are the Horten flying wings…..

MiG-15 is heavily based an the proposed Ta-183 isnt it?

As has been posted here by others, it is indeed the front spar Mod 2429 that is outstanding, however this is scheduled to take place during one of the forthcoming winter sevices.

As goes FI, she will be far lighter on the fatigue than some may think, even during her display years, she only consumed FI at a rate of 3 – 4 units per year. After recieving Mod 2429, she will have in the region of 70 FI units remaining, so as you can see, fatigue is not really a major issue with the aircraft.

Engines, however, are a different story, with their revised lifing schedule of 1200 cycles. A cycle is considered to be one excursion from Idle – Max – Idle. There are calculations for partial cycles, however, these are not something I know off the top of my head!! However, this illustrates the fact that it will be the engine life that dictates XH558’s future on the circuit, as once these cycles are gone, there is no option to re-life or rebuild the engines, so 558 will be grounded. To this end, the engines will be cycled through the airframe at 50 hr intervals, to ensure that usage and wear is spread evenly throughout the 8 spare engines that TVOC have.

Hope that answers a few questions.

    Flipflopman

thanks FFM, i worked out that at the TVOC quoted 0.6-0.7 cycles per flight hour that even if each engine acheived 600 in-flight cycles 558 would still have 857.14 hours per engine until no cycles remain, @ 800 IFC’s it goes out to 1142.85 hours per engine, say that each engine will use 200 cycles for ground running/testing during 558’s display life then maximum possible flight hour life per engine is 1428.57 hours per engine, so should 1000 IFC’s be achevied on each engine 558 has a potential for 2,857.14 flight hours, which would far exceed her remaining FI.

indeed even if each engine only survives to 600 IFC’s they should still give 1,714.28 flight hours across the 8, still enough to exceed her remaining FI.

Rear spar mmod was done already it is the front spar mod that is still outstanding.. TVOC said all along that the display would not be the same as when she was in the RAF as they want to conserve fatigue life and engines etc. Stilll impressive though!

I did some calculations on data about engine and fatigue lives for the airframe and engines.

for the 10-15 year period they intend to operate 558 neither would be of any real concern of being lifexed by the original display routine, provided of course that nothing ever packed it in, which as we all know does happen.

I think off the top of my head its the front one thats been done, either way its to reduce fatigue untill the mod on the other has been carried out…..which was it??…….b****r thats gonna bug me now.

Twas mod 2222 that was carried out wasnt it?

168,000, give or take a few; cyl heads may be relatively easy to produce, but they’re not what will be needed, its crankcases, crankshafts, camshafts, reduction gears, and cam covers with “Rolls-Royce” cast into them!

many thanks for the number stuart, i thought it wouldve been much more!

i think there may be one or two manufacturers making Merlin cranks, cams ect already, certainly though crankcases may be a problem, considering how many decent crankcases get grenaded at Reno each year

at first thats what i thought but when i sat down a thought about it does that mean the number of merlins in the world is dropping off???
i know even very worn engines can be rebuilt (linning the block and rewelding heads!) but there are cases were some engines are 2 far gone (cracked block, warped heads!) there can only be so many spare blocks and heads knocking about??

well i dont think were quite on the verge of a shortage of Merlins yet.

something in the order of half a million were built and many found non-aviation uses after the war, so i doubt we’ll be in trouble for some time yet.

I find that hard to believe. Avpin detonates at something like 7 Km per second, if you threw a bucket of avpin down the intake, there would be nothing left in short order, including the bloke with the fire cart, the bloke with the burning rag, the bloke with the bucket or anything within a hundred feet all around.

Like i said, ts only something id heard, i wouldnt have thought there would be too much truth to it
