The A-50s, of which I am pretty sure there have never been 40, would have worked with the MiG-31 fleet to cover the northern coast in a strategic environment. They were initially based all the way up at Pechora for a reason.
Also, the GCI posts were often mobile, along with the radar systems. Not mobile in the sense that they would be on the move in 5 minutes, but they were not necessarily fixed constructions either.

A lot of them were accidents. There have been confirmed instances of insurgents in Iraq even filming terrorists near crashed helicopters and claiming that they were shot down. At any rate the Apache was shown to have had a number of issues in Yugoslavia, but it had no problems in 1991 in the Middle East as far as I recall.
The MiG-29 had AA-10, wich are AIM-7 equivalents and AA-11 which had no equivalent at the time, so Russia in 1985 had the MiG-29 that was pretty well an F-15 equivalent
The first R-73s were earmarked for Su-27 units, so in 1985 your average MiG-29 unit may or may not have had any of them on hand. And the MiG-29 was never an F-15 equivalent, it was not a long-range air superiority fighter. That was the Su-27. The MiG-29 was an F-16 type aircraft that had the early advantage over the Lawn Dart of that pair of BVR weapons.
However it would depend if A-50 and IL-78 small fleet could assist them in at least a comparable way as american force multipliers.
The Il-78 wasn’t a factor. Neither the MiG-29 nor the Su-27 had IFR capability. The A-50 was not a serious factor either, as the Soviets were using a GCI structured air defense network.
Alright, the more accurate wording would be to say that the B-52H fleet and the Tu-160/Tu-95MS fleet are equivalent in terms of role, if not performance.

With a range of 3000km the Tu-160 does not need to fly very deep into enemy territory, basicly the Tu-160 is a B-1A equivalent not an B-52
But the B-1A never entered service…so as of right now, the Tu-160 is the Russian equivalent per se of the B-52H, as both of them are their respective nations strategic ALCM carriers. That was my point. Think outside the box!

No they didn’t, the M-17/M-55 were never fielded operationally. And the M-17 was originally conceived as a balloon interceptor anyway.

The Tu-160 and the B-1B are not on the same page. The Tu-160 is an intercontinental ALCM launcher, while the B-1B was a low-altitude strategic penetrator (never operationally received ALCM capability). In terms of role, the Tu-160 can be equated to the B-52H, while in terms of capability, it can be equated to the cancelled B-1A.

The MiG-23 and Su-24 evolved from STOL aircraft, not VTOL aircraft. The lift jet banks were there to assist during takeoff. Kinda like an overengineered RATO/JATO system, really.
Being a heavy multirole aircraft primarily intended to perform strike missions, I’d say that the Su-34 is the F-15E equivalent, not an F-111 equivalent!
At any rate the Su-34 is clearly superior to the legacy Aardvark thanks in no small part to more modern avionics, a wider range of PGMs, better stand-off capability, and the ability to actually defend itself and even perform capably in an active air-to-air role.
Well, in the early ’70s the F-106 was used to shoot down simulated RVs. BOMARCs were used as targets, and the AIM-4F and unarmed AIR-2s were both successful. One kill was recorded at 71,500 feet. Tests were conducted by the 475th Test Squadron at Tyndall AFB. In the late ’60s the YF-12A was also trialled in a similar role, it was used to track ICBMs fired from Vandenberg AFB. The weapon system proved capable of tracking and theoretically hitting a target, although they never fired at one. It was theoretically possible to kill one, provided they had a suitable AAM. I guess that makes the Blackbird the first boost-phase interceptor concept 😀
Further, the payload is not as limited as the B-58 since the FB-111A can carry up to 24 conventional bombs. However, this requires external carriage which restricts the wing sweep and degrades the range.
The inner four (two on each side) pylons could sweep with the wing. That’s still 24 500lb bombs without having to use the draggy outer pylons. The FB-111A did have a number of faults, but one has to remember that it was only intended to be an interim bomber, after all.

Plasma stealth, if it can be made to work on a full-scale aircraft efficiently, is not going to make RCS irrelevant. The nature of the system ensures it is pretty much useful only as a reactionary measure. That being said, it is still a very intriguing concept. What it allows you to do is immunize yourself to SARH and ARH guided weapons. Without having to design an airframe around LO, you can build for obscene maneuverability and WVR dominance, like the MiG 1.42. When engaged by a BVR weapon, the plasma system can mask your aircraft momentarily to get the weapon to lose lock. Then you’re free to close on the target and engage.
