There were no S-300 in Georgia. Only the search radar (two of them) was sold to Georgia by Ukraine. But no S-300 missiles or launchers.
These radars were used as part of the Georgian early-warning and integrated air defense network. It is my understanding that the photo of the one I posted was destroyed by Russian long range artillery (to be confirmed).
Correct. Many nations use the 36D6 (TIN SHIELD) radar as part of their EW network. India, Myanmar, and Ethiopia all do so for example, and have no S-300P systems in service or on order. They just perform basic EW tasks. The 36D6 can be used with the S-300P system, but is not employed by S-300P networks exclusively. Given that it is designed to also perform an EW function as part of an air defense network, it is likely that these radars may have aided in cueing Buk batteries, allowing their radars to remain silent and mask TELAR positions until they needed to fire.

So then deploying PAC-3 ERINT to the area makes no difference to the Russian Iskander deployment, contrary to what the journalist thinks.
I’m not saying the OTH is the targeting sensor, but that it can detect ships for cueing the imaging satellites. Then your imaging/radar satellites find actual military targets using either identification software or human monitoring. What is the problem here? Of course OTH by itself is not a targeting system without some other outside source. In this case, that outside source is the satellite network. Add that in there and you can target an ASBM with enough accuracy for the terminal homing sensor to take over following reentry.
The Jane’s article has reported KORNET-E as the satellite constellation.

Shahab-3 has a range of up to 2500 kilometers depending on the source. That’ll target all of the FRY, Greece, Turkey, Albania, Romania, Moldova, and Hungary. Give it a chem or bio warhead and there’s your European-ranged WMD delivery system.
And today Iran reportedly test fired a new mobile solid fueled missile called the “Sejil” with a reported range of 1,200 miles. This does not place it into the type of weapon with enough range to threaten Eastern Europe with any credibility.
So…if Russia test launches an Iskander, that means they aren’t developing the RS-24 and have no capability to research and develop an ICBM?
TLAM, for example, doesnt necessarily have to follow a direct course to the target though SOC. Even though you may not have a target every 50 miles it would effect a TLAM little to fly 50 miles off course track and then turn back in.
That’s all irrelevant if it weaves its way all over the place only to run into an S-300 defending the target its after.
Then there is the issue of saturation. Of course S-300 is a very powerful system but how many launch vehicles is a single TOMBSTONE able to control at a time and how many missiles is it able to guide simultaneously. Even then we come to the very basic concepts of radar horizoning and terrain masking. Can S-300 shoot at a target over the horizon or behing a ridgeline from the TOMBSTONE?.
One 30N6 can control up to 12 TELs. It can guide 12 missiles at a time to 6 different targets, although these figures are believed to have increased in the S-400 to 16 and 8. Yes, the system can be saturated, but there will be other assets in the area to protect the S-300 which can also be used to take out cruise missiles.
B-1s could do it.

Sean for chrissakes they bought the blueprints for Russian EORSATs and RORSATs and are trying to assemble something out of the Legenda mess. OTH-B etc still lacks the resolution to target for anything…its a cueing asset.
Did you read what I wrote? The Kornet satellites are the key. The OTH-B is analogous to an EW radar in a SAM system, not targeting but rather providing aiming data for the EO and radar satellites.
As for resolution, go into IEEE and search for OTH. You’ll be amused at some of the developments described therein.
In short there is NO……I repeat……NO viable targetting system for an ASBM existing or near term.
…until 2009 when the first Kornet-clone constellation is fully operational.

Now take those, consider the likely detection range against a JASSM (which was designed specifically for those “double digit” sites i.e. it’s got a very low RCS) and put those 22+ dots on a map of Russia. They don’t cover much.
What’re you firing JASSMs from that’s going to get anywhere near Russia without being seen en-route? B-2s aren’t an option in this environment, they have more amusing tasks to attend to.
You have to look at the whole picture from both sides.
Ionosphere, and hence the radar wave bounce, is dependent upon the time of the day, the weather, and the activity of the sun.
A lot of those affects can be mitigated to a degree by using different frequencies.

While researching the issue and discovering some amusing things about current OTH-B and OTH-SW accuracy, it did suprise me to learn that an active Chinese EO/Radar imaging satellite constellation was being fielded. So much for “ASBMs won’t work with just an OTH system” argument.
