No, do tell, what is this radar and what is it used for? And I fail to see how a Russian washes his or her face has any bearing on this conversation. Or does that affect this radar of which you speak?
Other than radar, do you know what SBIRS is? Makes the “the radar can see into Russia to see missile launches” completely beside the point. If that’s what this radar thing can do, that is, as I have no understanding of the concept obviously :rolleyes:
– Does Iran have (or will have in the near future) any capable rocket carrier that could reach European soil and not to mention US soil?
– If the Russians are not the threat, why the Pentagon doesn’t want to place those interceptors in Azerbaijan as the Kremlin proposed?
1. There is a Shahab-3 variant being developed that will range Europe. The Shahab-3 can already touch parts of it.
2. The northwest coast of Poland gives better position to intercept a missile on a trajectory from Iran to the East Coast of the United States. You also get better reaction time to set up a shot with the mid-course interceptor.
That staged demonstrations were in need of some strictly known conditions.
Did that QB-47 fly at 500 feet already and at what speed?
The YF-12 was in need to know in advance, there will be a QB-47 at a given time and at given point and so has the YF-12 to be there in the right moment. Of cause the QB-47 did nothing to break contact, when painted by the radar or did it?
Maybe you have the related conditions of that tests to give it to us. The claim that a QB-47 was hit 500 feet above the ground is a technical achievement, but the practical value is still more than questionable under wartime-conditions.;)
They weren’t able to proceed to the ECM environment operational-style testing as the program got shelved. But picking a target out of ground clutter while flying at 75,000 feet is still a major feat for the time period. As far as I have discerned the intercepts were not fully staged, the YF-12 did still try and locate the target. I gave the AN/ASG-18’s search parameters somewhere else already in this thread, but with a range against a bomber-size target of 150 miles being demonstrated in testing painting a QB-47 and not firing until 35 miles or so puts the bomber well within the no escape zone. Whatever maneuver it would’ve tried would have failed. ECM is another story, but as I said they weren’t able to progress that far. Those tests were planned but not executed due to the aforementioned cancellation of the program and the transfer of the extant airframes to NASA. At any rate, since no strategic bomber of the time was going to be going trans-Atlantic at 500 or 1000 feet anyway, it does show that the system was capable, ECM interference notwithstanding. Finding targets to blow up would not have been an issue.

Nope. That was SA-5 development that screwed the whole high-speed bomber idea. The SA-2 was pretty much ineffective in that regard, or it’d have been able to shoot down Blackbirds over Korea and Vietnam.
I assure you that after that conflict, the idea of an anti-ship missile equipped fighter or strike aircraft went up a lot higher on the list of priority threats for the Royal Navy (and indeed for all nations with a navy of some sort).

They used bomber-sized drones (usually QB-47s) to fly bomber mission profiles and then blew them away at altitudes as low as 500 feet, 70,000 feet below the YF-12. They hadn’t gotten around to anything more amusing, like firing at max design range, as the program was McNamara’d before they could conduct further firing trials. The system worked. Where specifically is the problem?

And what if they could hit Russian ICBMs. So what? Without the ABM Treaty, Russia has no right to dictate what the US does with its ABM assets. Just like Russia is not the overlord of Poland or the Czech Republic. Russia is free to take whatever measures they see fit in order to counter the ABM system that they think can hit their ICBMs, nobody is disputing that. But they have no right to tell the USA where they can or cannot place their systems as the relevant treaty no longer exists. Both sides can do whatever they want, and they should just get on with it already and stop the incessant bickering, which is pointless and will resolve nothing.

So the tests were faked then? More USAF propaganda? Because otherwise the system obviously proved its usefulness at altitudes BELOW 1000 feet. And it wasn’t even tested to its full capability at the time.
The next best thing to reality were the tests with the F-14A systems in the 70s.
There’s a big difference. The F-14 tests were done to prove the far end of the kill envelope and the multi-target capability of the system, and as such yes they were set up to prove what the USN wanted to see. The YF-12A’s missile shots were a completely different story, being nowhere near the design range of the system as they only fired on targets around 30-35 miles away. That’s something they’d surely be able to do with regularity, hit targets with missiles at less than a third of their design rMax. pK decreases as you increase the distance to the target and move it towards or outside the NEZ and close to the rMax of the system, which is why you see more AAM misses at longer ranges than at shorter ranges inside the heart of the weapon’s envelope.

That is not enough, you were in need of the best available GCI for your interceptor.
Uh, the AN/ASG-18 could sweep a corridor 100NM wide from sea level to 100,000 feet. Locating a target without a widespread GCI network wasn’t going to be as hard as you make it out to be. They were tracking EC-121s at 150NM as well.
The superior altitude would stretch the range of the most basic AAM’s, and maybe even allow ASAT to be developed sooner.
They actually tested the AN/ASG-18 and YF-12 against ICBMs launched out of Vandenberg AFB. They never shot at one, but they could easily track them. An airborne ABM system might have been a possibility had the system’s development continued.

Found the data on the missile shots. The lowest altitude engagement was against a target at 500 feet. The YF-12A was at Mach 3.2 and 75,000 feet and killed the target.

I believe India did some test with RAM on either a MiG-21 or a Jaguar. Russia has RAM, they’ve applied it to the intakes of the Tu-160 for one example. That’s why operational BLACKJACKs have black colored intakes and also why they’re covered when an operational jet is on public display. With around 2.4 zillion people living there, it’d probably be retarded to assume that China HASN’T figured RAM out, although I can’t think of any published references to Chinese RAM off the top of my head. Germany, the Eurofighter consortium, and France have all experimented with it in the past or applied it operationally: Germany probably can claim credit for inventing the stuff for the Horten bombers in WWII, and both the Eurofighter consortium and France have employed it on the EF-2000 and Rafale.
