Sometimes I use the Report Post icon at the upper right corner of a post, to report a post (duh) that’s gone waaay off-topic.
But days later, I don’t scroll back a thread to check whether the mods have done anything, or not, to said post. 8P

Yeah, for some reason that doesn’t seem to work so well. I don’t remember when the last time was that I got a “reported post” e-mail notification. That’s why I suggested the PM route!

IMO, different mods in different forums in this same site have evidently different attitudes (towards my posts in different forums, after I’ve received occasional PMs from a mod or three), and the mods in this “Modern Military Aviation” forum are the most compassionate.

Bring that to our attention then. Sometimes a mod from one forum isn’t as familiar with a poster and might misconstrue their intent or misinterpret their post. It happens.

Wow. That is a serious loss to the industry. He’s always been a favorite of mine. There’s a great book out called The Winston Effect that details his film work, it’s too bad that there won’t be a chance for a second volume.

The Kh-59 (AS-13) was rocket powered, the Kh-59M introduced conventional power to increase range, probably because longer-ranged Western SAMs like Patriot were finally being deployed in Europe to think of one logical reason. With a weapon guided by TV in that fashion, it helps to keep the operator alive I guess 😀

Don’t forget the R-60, which the LCA has been seen carrying on multiple occasions (like the image Victor posted a few posts up). Why they’d bother with that over the R-73 is beyond me, though.

The fake sites are just that, fake. They house Smokey SAM launch simulators and the like. Tolicha Peak is another story, being an apparent exploitation facility.

The simple solution would be to stop providing any sort of free or subsidized health care for things you do to yourself. Car accident from driving drunk? You pay the whole bill. Get cancer from smoking? You pay for the chemo. People know this is unhealthy, so they are totally complicit for any negative effects. Better yet, liver disease or lung cancer from alcohol or tobacco consumption should disqualify you from any sort of organ transplants as well, if they don’t do that already.

Welfare programs ARE unnecessary, but that’s a whole different issue. And for the record it doesn’t take a right-winger (of the US variety for you cross-ponders out there) to make a fool out of him or herself by calling China a growing military threat to the United States!

I do need to point out that while I say that Russia and China are not threats to the United States, that doesn’t mean that they are not capable. Just that they do not pose a threat in terms of the prospects for an actual shooting war. Anyone who’d write off Russia or China as incapable is fooling themselves.

So we could either honor our agreement with Taiwan or show the world that our value as an ally disappears if it comes to shooting.

I find it disturbing that a nation state should be required to maintain agreements which are no longer in its national interest. We’ve made enough of a fool of ourselves with our treatment of Cuba, our support of Israel and our inability to tell the world to solve its own problems by not withdrawing from the UN. Besides, the “one China” policy gives us a political way out, the ability to choose sides in this event. And why are we not supporting Abkhazia or other separatist regions on the globe? Same situation, provinces which want to be independant (Formosa having not declared independence). The answer is that Abkhazians have apparently not mastered the concept of making Nike shoes, plain and simple.

As for what we’d hit I’d guess it would be things like S-300 sites, their tactical ballistic missile capacity near Taiwan (yeah, I know that would be a problem), and naval targets in the Strait.

So we won’t hit Shanghai but we will still target mainland China. That’s enough for China to target the United States in kind. Defending Formosa should be a defensive effort not an offensive one if it had to come down to something that stupid, or it is within China’s right to strike at the United States in retaliation for acting in an offensive manner.

Quite right, you don’t want parity you want superiority. But in this case the JSF seems to be ill-suited for what the US military actually needs, which is a strike aircraft more suited to COIN and CAS. We tried to replace the A-10 with the more modern F-16 around the time of DESERT STORM, and that was a huge fiasco. At some point you have to be honest with your requirements and not just go for the shiniest toy in the box because it happens to be the newest one in there.

Probably not protected to the same degree, no. I’d assume that the JSF would have only have a nuclear role if it could take an internal B-83.

Yes it will be nuclear-capable, that was one of the reasons given as to why a gigantoid UCAV wasn’t an option for the entire program, although an unmanned ISR derivative is being looked at. The DoD still wants nuclear bombers to have pilots in the cockpit.

I don’t disagree at all. Part of my point was that the government is overhyping certain nations as “threats” when there is no logical basis for doing so apart from economic reasons (i.e. building more weapons). When they do that, then the military is equipped to fight those wars. My argument is that they’re picking the wrong wars to plan and equip for, and it’ll end up biting us in the rear at some point down the road.
