How are they rewarded? (Genuine search for knowledge, not a smart come-back)

    Moggy

Tax breaks, Moggy. (One that has or will soon be significantly increased by Mr. Bush) So they aren’t “at a disadvantage” to foreign based companies that pay no taxes. And the disgustingly prevalent “you scratch mine, I’ll scratch yours” attitude on capitol hill. A senator gets stockholders votes, or reelection contributions, and the company has no problem shutting down plants and sending workers home and moving operations abroad; not to mention that, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) , OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), etc. have no jurisdiction in third world countries, and American companies are more or less free to do business anyway they please.

    No environmental regulations?
    Cheap child labor?
No “benefits” to have to give to employees?
    No pesky safety inspectors?

If those aren’t rewards to a rich white CEO, nothing is. And until the gorvernment cracks down- the jobs will keep disappearing.

If a 16 year old searches for work and doesn’t find any, he’s counted. I say he shouldn’t be, since he should be firmly implanted behind a desk in school. Not being able to get a job at McDonalds to go buy CDs shouldn’t affect the unemployment rate because it makes the statistics biased.

Besides, it’s not like there aren’t jobs available. The real solution is to deport all the illegals, put claymores along the border, and offer those jobs to the unemployed. If there’s jobs out there, and you chose not to accept one, then it shouldn’t be the fault of the government for you not being employed. Besides, we’ve become a welfare state anyway. It’s more profitable in a lot of cases to stay living off of government handouts than to actually motivate yourself to get work. Welfare reform is also needed to cure the unemployment problem.

I wouldnt neccesarily be so quick to blame illegal aliens. Thousands, hundreds of thousands of people lose their jobs every year due to out sourcing. These skilled, tenured, sometimes high payed people should be expected to give up their way of life to go work as a housekeeper in some hotel, or pick crops? And considering the government actually rewards some of these companies for doing this; they should be responsible. It is the government and big business who are forcing good, working class people into poverty and onto welfare; yet they seem fine to let it happen.

Unemployment in this country can not be laid squarley on the shoulders of illegal aliens, considering that the only jobs they “steal” are the ones that only a 16 yr. old who wants to buy cd’s could realistically be expected to take.

As far as not counting 16 year olds into the unemployment rate- keep in mind that many kids go looking for work to help the family pay the bills and buy groceries, not simply for material reasons.

Those figures include ages 16 and up. Since most people don’t seriously enter the workforce until after high school (that’d be 18) or after college (that’d be 22 for a four-year program), the numbers are more than likely inflated.

Considering the Department of Labors guidelines for considering those who fall into the “unemployed” status; these numbers are probably about right, or more likely, to low, considering that they only count those who have actively searched for work in the last 4 weeks. Students who do not work are not classified as “unemployed” rather, as not in the labor force- and therefore their numbers do not affect the unemployment rate. And with large corporations outsourcing jobs overseas constantly;things are not looking any better for the unemployed. Because if there are no jobs, there can’t possibly be a decline in joblessness.

    Unemployment:
    December 2002-6.0%
    March 2005-5.2%

Looks like a decline to me.

Unfortunatley SOC, it’s not much of a decline- and over a three year period, doesn’t account for much, could be normal fluctuation. Besides- that doesnt show any real improvement that can directly be attributed to policys set forth by the current administration. And a 5.2% unemployment rate in a first world superpower country? Unacceptable.

A great way of dropping unemployment is to start a war. OK, so you lose a few thousand people who could have had a future to gain nothing at all – but they leave vacancies, don’t they? Maybe someone should sugegst to GWB that he should start a war or something.

Even better, Snapper- His administration could stop rewarding major companies who relocate thousands of jobs overseas to unskilled and low paid workers.

And even offer a free job training program in every major city across the country. Perhaps to every person over 30 who has been unemployed for at least 6 months or a year. Something comprehensive that covers many different skill sets and abilities. Discontinue cutting off unemployment benefits after x amount of time to people who are diligently turning in their proof of job hunting.

There are many things that can be done by the government to curb joblessness in this country, unfortunatley they just don’t bother doing any of them. 😡

    No idea CB.

We don’t tend to follow US domestic issues very closely over here.

In the light of the dreadful figures just reported from IBM, GM and Ford, is it doing ‘a fantastic job’? You are in a much better position to answer than we are.

PS: The message posted above was meant as a discussion starter. It does not necessarily reflect my views in totality

My comments were rhetorical, Moggy. Or maybe, sarcastic would be better. Just thinking how wonderful it would be if Bush decided to turn his gaze completley to the US instead of other countries. He’s made things worse by only half trying; I shudder to think what would happen if he put all his effort into it…. 😮

Your comments on religion and god being a private thing were remarkable. I agree.

The Catholic church cares less about dying blacks in Africa then they do about Bishops raping little kids in America.

Can someone please explain to me why exactly god cares who we sleep with? He has nothing more important to do? War with devil and planet to run and all…. Or, Perhaps there is no “god”- and those rules are the ones that the old men with the money and the power made up to keep all the peasants in line? Torchs and pitchforks do tend to scare the oppressors.

    Food for thought….

In the USA ‘Carmel’ is a place somewhere Clint Eastwood used to be mayor of. In Scotland “a carmel” is a little piece of chewy toffee wrapped up in paper and often referred to as a ‘penny carmel’ owing to it’s relative cost in real terms. :p

It’s CarMEL, California where ole Clinty used to rule in Tinseltown history,
and CarMUL is that horrible sickeningly sweet brown stuff people actually eat. 😎

Unless you say it properly- then it’s Care-uh-mel. 😉

Two words for you my dear…

    Hemel Hempstead :diablo: :diablo: :diablo:

Milton Keynes? Roundabout hell, yet apparently based on the American grid system. Madness – Nermal

Ha! HA! HA! HA! Couldnt pay me a million pounds (or dollars!) to go anywhere near either of those places. Magic Roundabout, I just bet. Probably end up in France or something. :p

At Landstuhl in Germany, there is a residential area with a tiny barrel-shaped roundabout on a huge piece of asphalt. It’s really great to take that roundabout the wrong way, especially because there are mostly Americans living there (it’s really close to Ramstein). The sheer horror on their faces if they see someone do the roundabout the wrong way – priceless fun!

You are so going to hell, Arthur. :p

Saw my first roundabout in the states up in Sedona, AZ- Flood was with me and was quite surprised. (he gloated the whole way home I might add. ) We have soem yield signs here in AZ, I love them, don’t think anyone knows what they mean though, people always stop when nothing is coming! Drives me crazy!

We enjoy turning right on red, too. A nice little perk to driving on the right right side of the road. :p

Roundabouts scare me silly, all those people coming at you, lord, I can’t imagine what I’ll do when I have to face one of those suckers on the A3 by myself or something. Watch out you Southern Englanders… :p
