I totally agree that a HS748 needs preserving in this country. It was one of the most successful British aircraft of recent years and it is amazing to compare the number of Heralds(which was a far less successful aircraft) preserved in the UK ( 6 at the last count) against the number of 748s(0!).(I know there is an Andover E3 preserved at Cosford, but the Andover was a highly modified design).

In response to TB752’s request for photos from Manston, here are a few taken in the summer of 1975.I don’t think the RAF’s premier fire school would have liked to be called a dump!
    1 Vulcan B.1A XH483
    2 Meteor F.8 WK803
    3 Canberra B.16 WJ777
    4 Varsity T.1 WJ905

Unfortunately I witnessed the accident(one of 3 fatal airshow accidents I saw in the space of 6 weeks) and I can still remember it as yesterday. Here is RR299 on it’s last ever pass just before starting it’s fateful steep climb that culminated in that terrible spin.

And she was a very historic airframe as well.Ex G-AOIF of BOAC.DC-7Cs are now becoming as rare as hens’ teeth. If I had the means and the money this is the sort of aircraft I would be preserving instead of yet another Spitifre or Hurricane.

Does anyone know the story behind this Luton Major G-AVON which I photographed at Hemswell about 1971?According to the Air-Britain register ,it was never completed, but it looks fairly complete in my photo.
