I totally agree that a HS748 needs preserving in this country. It was one of the most successful British aircraft of recent years and it is amazing to compare the number of Heralds(which was a far less successful aircraft) preserved in the UK ( 6 at the last count) against the number of 748s(0!).(I know there is an Andover E3 preserved at Cosford, but the Andover was a highly modified design).
I would love to see some more.So much more interesting than the usual Duxford/Old Warden overdose we have on here these days
A few more from Manston 1975
1 Meteor F.8 WK914 (This was later preserved,now at Scampton I believe)
2 Javelin FAW.6 XA829
3 Varsity T.1 WF413
4 Hunter F.4 WV268
5 Canberra B.2 WJ620
6 Canberra B.16 WJ782
7 Shackleton MR.2 WL739.
In response to TB752’s request for photos from Manston, here are a few taken in the summer of 1975.I don’t think the RAF’s premier fire school would have liked to be called a dump!
1 Vulcan B.1A XH483
2 Meteor F.8 WK803
3 Canberra B.16 WJ777
4 Varsity T.1 WJ905
5 Shackleton MR.3/3 XF705
6 Varsity T.1 WJ910
I do have several more pics if anyone is interested?
Unfortunately I witnessed the accident(one of 3 fatal airshow accidents I saw in the space of 6 weeks) and I can still remember it as yesterday. Here is RR299 on it’s last ever pass just before starting it’s fateful steep climb that culminated in that terrible spin.
And here is my shot of Victor Mike in his hybrid scheme pounding the Prestwick circuit in 1976.
They went a long time ago
WL795 at the Lossie Show August 1977
Stephen Piercy for me.His propliner shots were so vivid you can hear the sound from those magnificnt radials.
And she was a very historic airframe as well.Ex G-AOIF of BOAC.DC-7Cs are now becoming as rare as hens’ teeth. If I had the means and the money this is the sort of aircraft I would be preserving instead of yet another Spitifre or Hurricane.
Auster G-ANHZ at Ipswich circa 1970
Does anyone know the story behind this Luton Major G-AVON which I photographed at Hemswell about 1971?According to the Air-Britain register ,it was never completed, but it looks fairly complete in my photo.
Chris, you must have been at Thurleigh the same time as me?I worked in Air Traffic Control there from 1985 until closure in 1994.
