There are still wooden prop-blades used as field fence posts in the hills to the north-east of Macclesfield, some of them still black with the yellow tips still visible. They are locally reputed to be from Wellingtons. As far as I remember,RAF Handforth was always just a M.U. and never an airfield. You are correct in stating that RAF Wilmslow was a WRAF camp and had a Spitfire as a gate-guard in the 1950s.
Here is the map taken from ‘Wings over Thurleigh’
There is a very interesting map showing the proposed layout dated August 1946 in Mike Dobson’s fine book ‘Wings over Thurleigh’ published in 2001 (ISBN 0-9541594-0-3)
A couple of pics just to prove it was still in use until at least 1990!The first is taken in August 1989.Notice Cardington in the background, and the second is taken in August 1990 with the mill and farmhouse behind.

A couple of pics .
The first is of G-ACZE at Woburn August 1989,and the second is of G-ADDD/G-AJHO at Henlow June 1987.It was destroyed by fire after a force landing in February 1989.
P.S.Robbo,please keep your personal opinions to yourself. The ”home-counties Mafia” caused enough problems on this forum last year!
I totally agree with David Burke’s thoughts about the disposals from Old Warden. The policy over the last 10years or so appears to be ‘if it isn’t military, sell it’!Replicas do nothing for me at all;the aircraft has no soul that an original aircraft has,and I have gradually lost interest in Old Warden over the years. In the 70s and 80s I used to go to every show they held, but not these days.We are still losing original aircraft overseas such as the airworthy and unique (in the Northern Hemisphere) BA Eagle G-AFAX which has just been reported as sold to Fundacion Infante de Orleans in Madrid along with the DH60X Moth G-EBXU.They now have a collection of early British sporting aeroplanes that rival Old Warden!Swallow,Moth, Eagle and Swift). Was Shuttleworth offered the Eagle before it was sold to Spain?
She’s actually at North Weald in the hangar by the M11(Well she was yesterday at least!)
If you knew the local topography, you would recognise Alderley Edge on the right and Shining Tor on the left 🙂 .

A few pics from the 1977 Lossiemouth show.
1 The mighty EC-121T 23412 from the 79thAEWS.It was actually worth going to airshows in those days!
2 The damaged WGAF F-104G 26+06 after it’s landing mishap a few days earlier.Note the aircraft is on jacks with missing nose-gear,shredded main-wheels and damage to the nose and under fuselage pod.
