row 6 it says “external tanks”. I will attach the quote first and image of the CFT/Drop tank/external tank below.
Row 6, see?

Is that ok 4 u? 🙂The text comes from LM so its not my fantasy.
one thing that I find interesting is that, despite having an airframe with high transonic drag already, they didn’t think of shaping the drop tanks to allow for a lesser drag increase from the beginning.
the initial shape adds front surface to the “peak region” (the part of the drop tank under the wings is quite “fat”, incompatible with the “area rule”, as the rest of the aircraft, but that’s another point ) increasing even more that drag, while the new proposition rather reduces the impact the drop tanks would have (thinner part under the wing, and the volume is transferred forward of it)…
considering that there’s often whining about this or that european air force not buying european, it would be quite strange to go for an airframe coming from somewhere else…
– A good candidate may be the hawk (yet, one may ask, “why buy the aircraft to the brits while they don’t buy from us?” (naval rafale for example) :p )
– another good candidate would be the M346,.. twin engined, good performer, and most certainly giving the ability to install systems that would allow operational training and, eventually, light warfare if needed
– PC-21 would be just a trainer, but would lack performance if France had the idea to use a “cheaper option” for “overseas operations” like in Africa, for example
For example, one could imagine a Rafale going downtown leading a patrol of lighter aircraft to have a combined strike (cheaper than the 100% Rafale package) with all the capabilities of a Rafale, and with more eyes and bombs (guided by the leader) over the combat zone. A turboprop may have difficulties following in such a scenario
now before we get into it too much, can you give the f-16c comparison with same fuel fraction, CFT and all the needed pods and tanks…so we can have a baseline to see how terrible the f-35 is
no, I couldn’t care less (it won’t be flying around my house, with my taxes paying for it, anyway)… it’s rather the numbers from the testing that became public that have shown acceleration times way behind the F-16 or the F-18 in similar conditions (not to speak about more recent fighters like the eurocanards and so on)… (and no, I won’t bother digging it out either.. it’s been posted in this very forum, so if someone’s interested, he can look for it… no need to repost the same links all over again
It doesn’t make sense that 2 tanks of fuel, would only get you another 56nm. One of those figures has to be off.
initially, it’s from Lockheed presentation to Norway if my memory serves well… looks like quite a small gain, but that may illustrate the drag increase (and therefore, the increase in fuel consumption) with external stores. The extra tanks may be interesting not to increase the overall range, but to maintain range when stuff is hanging outside…
It’s a bit strong to say it has drag problems..because of the internal weapons of gen 5, they have the same drag with or without weapons.
it’s only seen when you compare gen 4 clean planes with no weapons or decent fuel load
ouch… not to be picky, but, unless your weapons weigh 0, your drag will increase once loaded (induced drag)
of course, not having stuff hanging outside should help, but it’s also about wing loading, aerodynamic shape and so on.
The fact that the F-35 has problems with transonic acceleration, especially despite its huuuge engine, just shows that its transonic drag is very high (to be expected if one considers its shape which is quite “fat” for a supersonic aircraft).
should ask for a referendum:
the politician taking such decision should be legally responsible if pilots crash and it appears they were under trained because of lack of flight time in high performance jets… all of a sudden they’d find cash to keep them trained as they should be…
Goldman SAchs and PwC aren’t russian.. they can’t know squat about economy, can they? 😀
FYI, howitzers as any canons, guns or bows use necessarily a ballistic trajectory any time they shoot, as their projectiles aren’t propelled and they aren’t used in space, which means that gravity plays a role (which is the definition of “ballistic”)
in any case, a missile is composed mostly of propellant, and as soon as the propellant is spent, it’s more or less an empty lightweight tube with almost no inertia left (very low mass), resulting in fast deceleration and rapid loss in maneuverability. If your opponent is aware of the shoot and starts maneuvering, the missile will deplete its energy in a matter of seconds
there’s a little logical problem in your reasoning: if the fast jets are vulnerable, how come you consider the slow movers and helicopters as being more appropriated? they’re even more easy targets for AAA and MANPADs.
no, just the follow up of advertisements war that’s going on over the brazilian deal since it started… remember how there were articles stating “from official sources” that the typhoon was the winner in india and would soon be announced as it was the best and blah blah blah…?
same thing here, working on the opinion, hoping to put the government under pressure…
man, you almost go it… 🙂
you just should change your sentence to “… from any fighters promotional website” and it would be perfect ^^
but then, of course, how would you sleep knowing that LMs promotion of the F-35 is, just like for any other manufacturer: only promotion… 😉
Of course, India is behaving silly like a kid. :highly_amused:
when they ask Dassault to take full liability over the deal regardless whether its Dassaults fault or no, then, yes, they behave silly like a kid… sorry if that hurts your feelings, but you should blame India’s officials for that :p
kidding aside, I’m pretty sure they are mostly trying to get the best out of the deal, so asking for “silly” things that nobody would give them no matter what, may allow them to get a few more stuff that’s “potentially available” 😉
er, south korea lining up for an american fighter? is that a news? there’s even no contest, the US could present them with sopwith camels, they’d sign up anyway…
india should just cancel and buy all f35. none of mrca aircraft give strong edge over neighbors new aircraft but f35 can.
yeah, right… you just forget that, more than fighters, India wants tech transfer and independence… two things that the F-35 won’t bring at all…
that’s where and why this deal might simply be stalling despite the jet perfs (sry just went back from earing 1hr of heavy french racist rambling at a bar).
India has alrdy grown to the “big guy” status. Sad you don’t understand that. Add an %=f(t+cte) and I guess this will be an easy problem to solve
my phrase was just to illustrate the fact that you can’t act like a kid and ask to be free of any liability in a deal such as this one. a “big guy” is the guy who assumes his responsabilities… 😉
