A lot of people seem to have misunderstood the point of my post. my point being that if a British pilot said the same thing that these French pilots have said they would deem the articles with as much scepticism as the Eurofighter fans (for lack of a better name).

Several people had quoted these French articles as absolute truth, my main point was to pose the question would you take it as absolute truth if the boot was put on the other foot?

With regards to pilots talking to the media bragging about the performance of their planes in certain exercises, i do thing that is unprofessional, i would think it’s unprofessional if it was done by a British, American, French or any other air force pilot. If the exercise was meant be made public then is should be the MOD of respective country that does this not a pilot in a press conference, if it make you feel better TMor I think your quote about a British pilot stating that the Eurofighter was better is unprofessional and him making him making his opinion public disrespectful to the French.

weather you judge me as prejudice or not is your call after all i am British and to some my post have come across as pro typhoon, but as i have previously posted i don’t care which is the better aircraft, i have said before i think we are capable of building better aircraft and i don’t think it is the best aircraft for the UK. But in this thread there have been a number of posts which has suggested that the Rafale is undisputedly a better aircraft in every spec and cited these articles of proof, which is what I take exception to.

The argument I’m trying to promote is that both aircraft will have their merits, and just because a pilot states something is true doesn’t make it so, equally if a British or German pilot said the opposite you would hold the contrary articles with sceptism and rightly so! Please don’t take my previous remarks somehow as anti french i have nothing against the French nation in fact i have far more against my own.

With regards to my outburst towards golden prawn I apologise that was not well considered. I would do well to consider that freedom of thought and speech is something that should be allowed to all people. But I do believe his posting is mostly inflammatory remarks (granted some may see my previous couple of post as similar and for that I apologise.) and he could benefit from a more balanced outlook, from what I have gathered from his post he is of the opinion that the Eurofighters have no good attributes and the nations that made it should be ashamed of themselves.

    just a reminder:

no pilot from the french air force would appear in a press conference “accidentally”.

if he was there, it’s because the people above him (minister and probably the president too) wanted him to be there to talk about the exercises.

so much about “unprofessionalism”… the guy was doing his job, as ordered by his superiors

    @swerve

what’s wrong with the f-18 or f-16? or the harrier for that matter?

in the jobs they have to do, they do just fine.

if USMC really need a stovl platform, it’s for close support, not air superiority, they could do perfectly with a much simpler and cheaper platform than the latest stealthy gadget…

same goes for the USN or the USAF… if an aircraft does its job, who cares how old it is? B-52’s have been around for decades and, as the things go, might just as well reach a century of service

often we read stories about the “bad guys” with fantastic capabilities, but the fact is, those who can afford them either are too strong to be attacked anyway (have nukes for example) or economically so strongly related with each other that there are much more efficient ways to deal with them.

the f-35 was supposed to be a “cheap and exportable f-22” more or less. but with all the sophistication and lesser orders it will be way too coslty for the benefit it brings compared to other types.

it’s like changing from your good old sports car that goes just fine and wins races to a newer one, shinier, with platinum wheels with incrusted diamonds which has 5mph higher top speed which costs you an arm and saying that you really need those wheels and 5 mph increase in top speed…

which rempinds me of a book “naked in da nang”, written by an ex-FAC, and about the chapter where he narrates how, when he was flying his cessna over the jungle he saw a SAM coming his way… a 2 million dollar missile to take out a 50000 dollar aicraft.

he shouted some insults and “give me the two million dollars, I’ll break the cessna myself.. and then just repay the USAF for it!!! you *£§#@¤!!! (coded language to protect sensitive ears 😀 )

This is a bit exagerated. And Rafale never lost to the Typhoon in any competition so far i think.

you’re right that it never lost to the typhoon, but what you should remember is that rafale managed a unique feat: lose against “nobody facing it”

in morocco there even wasn’t a competition, as they wanted a french aircraft, and the french managed to mess things so much that in the end morocco went to buy F-16s…

it’s like waking up too late and not being on time for your work… you just delay your watch by a couple of hours and say: “yeah!! I’m right on time! even a bit early…” 😀

    and yet another hiccup….

    http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2011/04/27/356004/new-engine-snag-upsets-f-35-manfacturing-progress.html

strangely, shortly after cancelling the F-136 engine, the F-135 engine seems to have problems.. and not new problems apparently

    at Rii

well, it sounds all that more ridiculous as the US had tried to do just that a few decades befors, with McNamara’s identical idea that led to the ATX -> giving the F-111 which was all but affordable and in th end didn’t even serve in all branches

tankers won’t come that close. all they’d need is to refuel fighters over the coast and wait there for them to come back. argentina’s SAMs they may deploy along the coast “just in case” would reach far further than the range of any A2A missile used by the RAF, not to say that the fighters protecting them would jump on the typhoons in quick order, forcing them either to deplete their missiles shooting at fight”ers or turning back home

LOL.. What would have happened to RAFALE’s if Kaddafi had installed the S-300 around these targets?

that’s a question tu which nobody here has an answer.. and if someone has, he can’t talk about it 😉

according to french navy official site, its top spped is M1.3 @ 11000m (33000ft)

where would it dive from to get there?

its engine is the same as Mirage F1 (mach2 fighter) but without afterburner.

as for talking about supercruise, well… since it doesn’t have the afterburner, it does fit the definition of supercruise as “supersonic flight without the use of the afterburner” but I doubt anyone uses that speed for “cruising” 😉
