Pardon my complete ignorance on this HotDog, but what aircraft is this and what are the markings?

    Thanks,

I’d say they use SEMs simply because they are good aircraft and fit for the job… and they do it quite fine.

What you need is the aircraft to do the job, not necessarily a “swiss knife” full of gadgets most of which you don’t need.

considering the size of the country and the fact that, usually, serbia has no business going to fight wars half the planet away, the Mig-35 would fit just nice.

a flanker would really be overkill, since its big size is dictated by the need to go far (carry tons of fuel).

actually even if it was a Galeb, there’s no reason it couldn’t evade A2A missiles, if flown properly and close to the ground..
    easy? no, possible? why not?

of course, evading coalitin fighters’ attackes forever is a bit too much… one way or another, it was doomed from the moment it was detected

one question, how do you shoot down an aircraft that’s landing?

A2A missile won’t do, and strafing isn’t the brightest idea you might have (there are plenty of pretty angry guys down there, that had been on the receiving end for some time now… and if you go down to the gun range, you’ll be pretty much an easy target for all the manpads that are most certainly positioned around the airbase)

as for “coalition can bomb anything with the zexcuse of protecting civilians”.. it’s pretty simple: they have sided with the rebels and keep doing the work for them.

if you believe even just for a second that that rebelion may end in a democracy or anything resembling democracy, you’re not just naive, but worse.. much worse… it is a civil war, tribe against tribe, and the winning tribe will “clean” the part it “liberates”… the only difference is that west nations are now involved (and therefore, responsible) if the rebels win… but hey, we don’t care… there’s a saying: “history is written by the winners”, so, all we have to do is win, and then, we’ll say it’s all good and nice, and by the time the reality comes out, nobody will care anymore…

it won’t be the fiorst time anyway… what’s absolutely crazy, is that there are recent examples showing that “bringing democracy” doesn’t work (irak, afghanistan) and yet, we continue de shove our noses where they have nothing to do… pretending “humanitarian reasons”

His residence wasn’t bombed. There’s a large walled compound with several buildings in it, including military & administrative buildings, & also one of his many residences. One of the other buildings was attacked, not the residence.

That compound is defended by SAMs & AA guns.

not what was reported in media around here (france), it was said that in the night from 21 to 22 march gaddafi’s residence was bombed

In the same way that Gadafi brought overwhelming firepower superiority to bear on unarmed civilians? And since when has the destruction of air defence and military assets been equivilent to “destroying the whole infrastructure” of Libya?

    er,

    – 1/ gaddafi had in front of him angry guys that were armed and wanted him dead or at least out of libya… he fought back. is ne nice? of course not, but the tales about “mad dictator sending troops armed to the teeth to massively eliminate innocent civilians” is just that: tales… there’s a civil war with armed people on both sides… libya is a tribes-based society, not unlike afghanistan, and it’s one tribe against another

    – 2/ air defence assets? gaddafis residence is an air defence asset? (bombed yesterday) and it’s not the only one… you should wake up a bit: there’s the propaganda telling you “we’re there to save those poor innocent civilians” and the reality: “france, britain and others participants went in to get rid of gaddafi hoping to get contracts with the rebels who’d get to replace him”

and one wonders why germany got out.. they said in th efirst place that, as far as defense of civilians goes, they can participate, but they won’t go beyond the UN resolution -> since the obvious aim is to remove gaddafi from power (outside the UN mandate) they get out… at least one political leader that sticks to his word… it’s so rare today

I have been looking at some wreckage photos..and there are all types of damage to the skin …but I didnt exactly find a similar linear pattern with small holes , it seems odd..like hits from an aircraft cannon/gun.

Its unlikely though , because then gaddafi would have been running naked all over town with a trumpet.

actually, if you shoot at a flying aircraft with a gun, you won’t have linear pattern, or closely spaced holes… they’ll be spread all over the place, since you shoot at a fast moving target with a gun that vibrates, and is affected by a certain amount of dispersion by construction.

it’s only in movies that you see things like a neat line of holes next to each other

the pattern seems quite regular. possibly F-15’s structure (seem to follow rivet lines et etc) lying underneath these cracks caused the skin to crack on impact

they are canted out. there was a flutter problem with the “bigger wing” and the “canting” is the solution they came out with

    Design weight was a fail.
If SWAT did not happen I would say yes. But, SWAT did take place and all F-35s are meeting their MTOW goals.

er, design weight means “how much the aircraft weighs”, not MTOW.. and it is overweight, even today -> spec not met

so if it just meets MTOW (which is aircraft weight+load weight), that simply means that it carries less load than expected as the aircraft weighs more than it should have ibn the first place.

Cmon, you can hardly compare Libya’s primitive air defence systems with those being sold today.

    SA-2, 3, 5, 6, 8’s are not comparable to current systems.

well, they were enough to do the only stealth aircraft shootdown until now (SA-6)…

the fact remains, they do the job (the rafales, I mean 😉 )

Only a indication of the confidence they have of their jamming and autoprotection system. But it’s hardly a news, all the exercices in this domain have demonstrate the same thing.

well, I guess Kovy underlined that because of all those F-35 fanboys saying that so called 4th gen aircraft and such are dead meat if sent into combat without stealth platforms clearing the air defences ahead of them…

obviously they can still do their job as needed 😉

maybe he was simply flying low (to avoid detection by the awacs perhaps) which would result in very short delay before being hit and crashing, forcing the pilot into a low alt ejection
