Hi all
Not too pessimistic! The name Dakota was given to the Douglas C-47 by the British. The prewar Douglas DC-3 was just called DC-3, no more. The name Dakota appeared during WWII in / via UK. The US name for the aircraft was Skytrain for the C-47 or Skytrooper for the C-53, two military versions of the DC-3. Just check the A-B Gradidge book on all details and you’ll find the differences between a DST, DC-3, C-47, C-53 and all those other versions.
Since the name of the aircraft has a British origin, I suppose it’s the British Purchasing Commission in combination with the RAF. There must be a report on a meeting during which formally was decided to call a Dougas C-47 a Dakota in UK. I’m working on that, will take several months before I have it. By then I’ll be back on the forum.
The name? No doubt linked to the US indian Sioux tribe, there were the Dakotas, Lakotas and Nakotas. And what does it mean, the name Dakota? That’s no secret anymore.
For those interested in details or willing to help to find the source, please send me a pm.
Ta’qali is a good place, the museum, the art shops nearby. And the wine they make is even better!
RAF Mitchells of various versions flew with 98, 180, 226 and 329 Sq, furthermore with 320 (Dutch) Sq, 305 (Polish) Sq and 342 (Lorraine) Sq. Check http://home.att.net/~jbaugher2/b25_22.html for some basic details.
Kind regards
Coert

Hi
Check http://www.therealdadsarmy.co.uk/ for the details. They were at Shoreham last weekend.
Dakota 42-100971, now PH-PBA, the former HRH Prince Bernard Dak of DDA Classic Airlines and frequent UK airshow visitor, flew during D-Day as 6E-B with 52nd Troop Carrier Wing / 316th Troop Carrier Group (TCG), operating from Cottesmore. Flew in the night of 5 to 6 June 1944 with chalk number #3 with troopers of 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division to DZ “O” near Ste. Mère Église.
The one that came from the Netherlands was Cessna UC-78 Bobcat HB-UEF (c/n 5253, Ex: 43-7733). This one was at my airfield {Teuge} for a while and was sold to Belgium as OO-TIN.
… and there was a handicap race in the afternoon for most of the aircraft, Freighter and DDA’s Dakota (see the red C172 picture) included… long time ago
And I’ll check my files. Wrote an article on the subject, and FlyPast had an article on the subject some 15+yrs ago… There are good bw pictures available. See ya coming weekend Archer!
The book is still for sale at the FLASH Aviation Shop in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. In case you need details, please send me a PM
Yes, the plane was in camouflage. No stripes under the regi on the fuselage visible. Underside unknown. Colourscheme looks standard
There are several pictures of DC-3 PH-ALI as G-AGBB. Check the book “Flight 777” of Ian Colvin or the book “Dakota” published in 1985 in the Netherlands. This last mentioned book has several pictures of AGBB showing the damage of the German attack on 15Nov42.
Hi
I think Ronnie will find the answer to his questions in the coming weeks, also based upon the info from this group. And that’s why we have these groups. Maybe we’d meet at Gilze-Rijen AFB in NL to check last details?
And Archer, check your pm, some B-25 things to do!
All the best
