Tried 3 times to actually send a message – kept coming back “cannot send message – unrecognised user”…..

Still feel it’s wrong to sell what actually isn’t owned by the seller – scrappies own it – for better or for worse…

Bits of XL391 on eBay already…http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/A-piece-of-Vulcan-Bomber-history_W0QQitemZ6029279900QQcategoryZ70106QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Crikey, that didn’t take long did it?

Not surprisingly, you can’t contact the ‘seller’ – so maybe eBay recognise this farce too….

If not the legitimate owner, eBay frown upon you selling bits on there.

    DON’T BUY 😮

    Question on negative scanning process….

Sorry to sound a bit ignorant – this topic caught my eye…..

Can someone explain to me why a normal flatbed scanner cannot be used for B&W negative scanning please? I have a collection that I am interested in adding to my online photo albums, but can’t afford to get anymore specialist equipment… I have Paintshop Pro software which I use a lot on pics, and that has the ability to convert negative to positive etc, so I’m a bit lost as to why a normal scanner cannot process a film negative, especially a B&W one????

Watching it right now…. obvious question arose when they had the team boarding the (real) aircraft in various scenes set both here at Manchester Ringway and Munich – it was obviously a full size aircraft used, and it sure looked like an Ambassador but I was under the impression that there is only one surviving example which is at Duxford? And googling that shows it to be in pieces?

Not being knowledgable on Ambassadors much, can anyone shed any light on how they filmed those shots? The cgi crash sequences were obviously so, and I would imagine that the airfield used for filming must have been a UK one (Duxford perhaps?)…

    I’m intrigued….

Imagine if you could bring that base back to its former glory, a complete stock restoration…… 😀 ……

…….and fill the hangers with some fine examples of “classic” period aircraft – and flyers amongst them of course. And ‘staff’ it with a mix of volunteers and resident tradespeople to re-enact all the scenes rememebred by an ex-RAF folk…

    Well I can dream can’t I? And yes I know it sounds a bit ‘Duxford’ ish….lol 😀

Lovely pics JDK, nice to see some “in base” shots of a place I’ve been past many times, and remember well from my service days!! Never went in there, but the look of the base is reminiscent of many others I have been in of course. I love the historical aspect of old bases, as well as my passion for military aviation.

    Here here….

If we don’t encourage the younger generations to get involved / interested in historical aviation – we’re going to be in the situation in the future of having no-one to continue the work of others in the field, and reading the recent posts demeaning this poor individual has made depressing reading. I volunteer in a Museum myself (when time permits) where we encourage the younger generation to get involved…..

I would personaly love Ollie to meet up and see for himself what is involved in conservation of our heritage etc…. hopefully then taking steps to commit some time at a convenient place to persue his obvious interest in aviation in a meaningful manner. We all find it incredibly easy to be siting infront of our PC’s writing on this forum in the comfort of our own home, but how many have actually taken it one step further and “got their hands dirty” etc….
The recent forum discussions centered around Ollie have shown how easy it is to run down one individual by comments made – and that is the bad side to the huge world wide web I’m afraid…..

I’m amazed that a moderator hadn’t stepped in sooner and stopped the comments.

Ok, off my soap box now.

However, all that said, if you can generate the interest in a particluar airframe, there is no reason why not. Now, how many forum members want to part own a Hawker Hunter?

Hmmmmm, let me pause and think about that one for a second………..

Thanks hunterxf382 Does the phantom still carry its kill in this scheme do you know ?, it did when it was in ADF grey, The other phantom used to be next to the perimeter fence with a kaman huskie last time i went, i have pic of it somewhere.

I really need to go to MAM next year it has obviously been too long since my last visit.

    curlyboy

Yep the Phantom does indeed still have it’s Mig Kill marking on port side…..

Wow, how long ago was your last visit….lol :diablo: The Huskie has been inside the “Robin” hanger for a few years now, under restoration!!!
Looks like you will be gobsmacked when you visit next then… what with all the additions and changes, etc…..
Never a dull moment at the friendliest Museum going…. (he says with just a hint of bias given his volunteer status there….lol)

    Hope you enjoy it…..

    curlyboy,
One of MAM’s Phantoms is in its Vietnam colours, and the other is in bits away from the main aircraft park (think its just used for spares)
    Hope this helps,
    TMN

The “Mig Killer” Phantom was repainted in authentic Vietnam colours some years ago (2002) I reckon from my archives…. The other Phantom was the first to arrive at the MAM having been ‘chopped’ by the US Air Force for it’s road move with a chainsaw 😮 through the wings…. Not the best way to transport it, so the Museum was lucky to get hold of the “Mig Killer” one from Upper Heyford and transport it by our own methods which involved removal of the outer wing sections to bring it within the transport limits etc….. The chopped one is just too much work to repair given that we have a complete example, but it’s not really a ‘spares ship’ – just in deep store for now…

Having seen a large number of aircraft returned from basket cases to pristine aircraft the question arises “Does anyone keep documentation (Manufacturing drawings, manufacturing processes, Bill of Materials etc) of the new parts that required manufacturing ?”
It is assumed that long term static outside storage is not covered by the in-service APs. I am aware that the BAPC has some documents available but is there/ should there be something more ?

Essentially, you’re right about the BAPC being the central pool of information for Museums regarding the preservation of exhibits. Their knowledge has been sourced from well known restoration ‘experts’ in some of the big museums, etc.. They also have an established list of ‘core’ types worthy of preservation etc – something which a lot of Museums work to in establishing their collection policy etc. There are also some well known restorations carried out by individuals which is then very well documented on this web (I respectfully use the MAM Canberra as a very good example – with Les B’s amazing site portraying Malcolm’s hard work in words and pics….)

Some smaller projects / Museums may well be “going it alone” through lack of resources too. It would be a massive project to undertake a complete documentation of restoration techniques, especially on individual types…

There are folks who bemoan the BAPC, but to be fair, they are there as the ‘central body’ for ALL aviation preservation – and they can be damm useful at times…… OK they don’t always seem to have the finger on the pulse, but I don’t see any other organisation taking over their role do you?

Drawings of whole aircraft / parts – well if we’re talking ex- military – the RAF Museum archives haven’t got it, others seem to have from somewhere… Obviously that applies to UK aircraft.

    Interesting idea though…….

Yes quite a dated pic ! How alot has changed since ! NF14 now in 64 markings, Sea Vixens wings been lowered and repaint in process, Canberra ben brought back to life and painted as has the hunter thanks to Malcom ! Doves been repainted in dunlop colours by me and others and of course the Sabre, Hind, Iskra are missing !
    Cheers Scott

Not to forget the following changed since then……lol

Vulcan repaint, Voodoo repaint, Whirlwind repaint, SHAR arrival, Prentice refurb, Gannet work in progress, F6 Lightning work in progress, Beaver work in progress, T33 repaint, HS125 repaint (think it’s in old colours in that pic), BP111 possibly refurbed since that shot (I think), Gnat moved and repainted (it’s tucked in bottom left corner next to Sea Hawk in that shot – wingless), Javelin repaint finished, and so the list might go on if my memory wasn’t so fogged….lol The MAM never rests on it’s laurels…. always plenty of projects on the go to catch visitors out between visits – that’s part of the buzz of working there as a volunteer!!! (I should know 😉 )

Knowing my lack of time off, for all I know the whole site will have been tarmaced and a proper flight line display introduced before my next visit……lol

One thing concerns me about the shot in general… it’s broad daylight and yet the car park is empty and the only life to be seen inside the site are a couple of moles 😮 😮 What time of day was this shot taken I wonder???
Only closed on Xmas day, so can’t quite understand why it appears closed??
