The aircraft it was representing was EG-T ( MM417 ) of No 487 Sqn RNZAF, No. 140 wing, No. 2 Group, 2nd TAF.

Ya mean this one: 😀
This link might help – the official guide from the RAF itself – seems that the white was always there until recently (I was in RAF from 1978, and 2 tone markings without white appeared from early 70’s.)
Yeah, doesn’t look right without the white – although need to check that there weren’t some exceptions made with markings during the wartime period – these things happen….
Pic shows RR299 as it flew in preservation:
It’s the sheer speed of the cut and thrust debate here that impresses me.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…. oh sorry, must have dozed off for a while there…. :diablo:
Is this debate still running then?….. 😮
😀 😀 😀
Up to early 1976. They’d formed at Fairford originally.
Since then they’ve been at Scampton, Cranwell and Scampton to my knowledge.
Moggy
And Little Rissington of course..lol
The MAM Meteor NF14 was previously at Cosford when it was painted all over yellow – either from its test flying days, or it may even have been the prototype (?).
WS838 was used as a chase plane at Boscome Down which is why it was painted yellow… Over the years it’s proved impossible to successfully apply the same colour paint whilst at the MAM due to problems with surface reaction so it’s now in a lovely cammo scheme which is far more durable and makes life so much easier in terms of maintenance of this finish….
Actually, what I thought was a Lightning behind XM650 now looks like a Bucc when the picture is bigger. Anyone disagree?
Deffo agree it’s a Bucc alright…. coca cola bottle shaped (area rule) fuselage; blast screen for rear nav’s seat; having a rear seat..lol; yep – no doubt at all :diablo:
Ooo nice, do you know where the Meteor NF11 is from? Could be the one from Midland Air Museum, think theres went a while ago (can’t remember if it was there last time I visited)
MAM example is an NF14… and it certainly hasn’t moved to my knowledge… 😮
Oh and on the subject of Valiant – just had regular RAF Museum update email, which contains a small shot of the Valiant being craned together in a hanger, amongst other shots…
It’d be hard for it to have been Lakenheath as I can assure you it is still very active (looks out of window at runway… 😉 )
Well that was my thought too…… so my assumption was correct after all – what would a contestant’s mum know anyway…lol
Still no response to whether the SHAR was the ex-Booker one though? 😮
Isn’t it Bentwaters.
Got to admit I had thought it was Bentwaters at first, but then one of the show’s contestants Mum’s mentioned that they had previously visited Lakenheath many years ago although the contestant wouldn’t remember it… so the location secret’s out…..lol
Sea Harrier with Chequerboard marking on TV
Anyone else spotted the same looking SHAR appearing as set dressing on “Space Cadets” Satellite Show on E4 (follows right after the Channel 4 show). It’s parked up in a a HAS at Lakenheath at the moment for it’s ‘live’ appearances along with what appears to be an ex-Northolt VIP-fit HS125??
:diablo: Well at least it gave the mid-upper gunner a fighting chance to shoot their own engines off now…. 😮
Another sad loss to the aviation community. I’ve lost count of the number of times I saw Ray displaying over the years… A truely awesome pilot, and one who will be greatly missed by many. Condolences to his family.
We sadly seem to be gradually losing the ‘old school’ pilots who had vast experience on many classic types – inevitable I know, but such a shame nevertheless…
R.I.P. Ray Hanna
The annual Mike Twite Trophy (administered by FlyPast) would have been ideal for this but it seems to have disappeared. I think the SAAB-Scania sponsored Transport Trust Award is still up and running.
Roger Smith.
OK Roger – any idea how we could find out?
I’ve raised this question before when it was advertised on another forum – who covers the insurance for the lucky winner to ride in this?
God forbid something should go wrong, but live military fast jets can be fickle things, even in the best hands – and catastrophic failures are one of the risks involved here…. Would you like to be the family of someone hurt or worse in the event of an incident during this risky business? and without insurance?
And on a CAA licensed airfield, can’t imagine the CAA would let it run with member of public on board without insurance?
Sorry to sound negative, but many years experience on military jets gives me reason to be sceptical
