As a systems support person the most common causes of system
crashes tend to be the ‘BIU’ (Biological Interface Unit – the user!).
No seriously computers crash for all sorts of wierd and wonderful reasons, dodgy software, incompatible drivers, computer viruses,
power problems and old age of the system e.t.c.
The best way to help minimise the damage system crashes cause is to backup all your work on a regular basis. get a virus scanner installed. Use drivers provided by the manufacturer.
Think about power supply protection e.g. a ups.
Shut down software and the operating system correctly, wait for software to close.
The system restore feature, usually works by taking a ‘snapshot’ of your hard drive and storing it. When you restore, it copies the last snapshot you took, like a book mark. Im not sure if it restores everything, im guessing you would have to install the drivers again?
The recovery disk you got, I think they contain the operating system and system drivers and dont actually recovery anything (I may be wrong).
The best way is usually just to start from scratch and reinstall everything, but only if you got a backup of your work.

“There is another RAF airfield close-by(north-east ish), but can’t quite recall it’s name it was mainly used for Venture motorgliders.”
That airfield is RAF Syerston, Home of the Air Cadet Central Gliding school. they operate Vigilant T1s and Viking TX1s. I done my gliding scholarship there : )
I think they also have a concrete runway as well? ( i was in the Viking so i did not need it!)
Used RAF Newton for our accomodation and mess for the week.
I remember two Seaking Commando helicopters that stayed for a night stop at Newton.
