Thanks Ross…pretty common then! At least I know what it is now.
Slippers,
Have a look at this web site for further information on identifying genuine clasps from copies:-

Gerry
Thanks Gerry….yes found this site. It look slike the ‘single’ 1939-45 star with clasp matches all the signs of being an original as everything matches up, whereas the 2 with groups are definately copies. I assume it would be acceptable to put the original back with one of the Groups as he is entitled to it?
With regards to photos it may be a better idea for me to photo copy some of the docs as they may come out better…..if you could private message me with an address I can send them to I could do this over the next few weeks?
Hi Gerry,
Thanks for your reply……yes fortunate in one way but not in another.
Will take photos of what I have over the next few days (back to work today) and will email them when done. Not much on Waller unfortunately but a few bits a pieces on Doughty. Will try and do the best pictures I can with the cameras I have.
Thanks……hopefully you will see photos on flickr…..just set up an account which should show 6 pictures…..if this works I may add some more if people are interested of other documents and photos I have for Waller and Doughty?

Managed to transfer photos to computer….although cannot upload as size too big. Anyone any ideas how I can show the photo’s?
Regards
Thank you everyone for your replies and especially the link to Doughty’s bio- thanks PanzerJohn.
In answer to some questions-
Simon Spitfire- Why do say there are no photo’s of Doughty? I have a full file with lots of original information including photo’s. I will try and upload these later but I am struggling to at the moment.
Moggy C- ‘Inherited’….my Mother passed away in February and my Father has had to go into a home at which point he told me that the medals were for my inheritance and to have them now which is how I have them.
The claspin the picture has the ‘nick’ down the edge as described and from what I can establish this is possibly a later issue, issued to those who had lost there originals. Originally I thought the picture I had took was ‘Wallers’ but I mixed them up. The picture originally is the single 1939-45 star whereas it is plain to see that the other 2 bars I have on Wallers and Doughty’s groups do not have the nick and also have a large ‘o’ in the Of.
Many Thanks again for all the information and I will try and upload the pictures as soon as I can figure how to get them onto my laptop without a lead (my son has gone away until the end of the week with the lead!)
Thanks Gerry.
Will look through the files for any paperwork for Waller and with regards to Doughty there is a big file so hopefully there should be a photo!
I do not intend to get rid of these as I find them fascinating, but are they worth a lot (need to consider insurance!)
You jammy beggar!!
I wish I could be that fortunate.
Gerry
Thanks Gerry…….looks like it could be worth a few pounds so happy days!
Thanks for the message- Yes the recipient initials are G.A……will look for the paperwork.
Just been looking through more of the medals left and there are another 2 Battle of Britain medals- 1 in a group and 1 on its own.
The other group has noted ‘copy’ bar on a slip of paper – recepient N R A Doughty…loads of paperwork with this one.- No nales on any medals but looks like he was a Sqdn Leader- medals are
1939-45 Star
Air Crew Europe with Clasp Atlantic
Africa Star
Italy Star
Defence Medal
War Medal
The other single I know nothing about who it belongs to but a slip next to it states ‘original’!
Are these group worth much though with the clasps being copies?
Again thanks for your help…..will keep looking to see what else there is!
Thanks Andy.
Cannot locate any paperwork at the moment but the other medals are as
follows-
DFC
1939-45 star with the clasp Battle of Britain
Air Crew Europe Star with clasp France and Germany
Defence Medal
War Medal.
From some notes with the medals the recipient was Aircrew and he was a Sgt and ended as a Flight Lieutenant.- Surname Waller.
Hard to tell from this photo.
There are a good number of fakes, but all are detectable. However, a key pointer is whether or not there is a little ‘nick’ down the side edge of the clasp – just out of your shot. Run your thumb nail down that edge of the bar. Is there a nick or groove just above the bottom left hand hole?
Yes, valuable if orgininal.
Just the bar is around £1,500 at todays prices, but the value could be in the provenance of the group. Does it come with paperwork etc? Or just the medals? And what are the other medals in the group?
The attached may help.
Hi Andy,
Thanks for the prompt reply. The bar is sewn onto the ribbon and it does appear that there is a ‘nick’ in the bar. I will look whether there is any paperwork and will detail the medals a little later.
Many Thanks again.
