Hey Matt,

I like your list but I think you are over looking a great aircraft from that time period: The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk. The US Navy used them for every possible task, fighter, bomber, tanker, trainer, etc. The Israelis used them with great success, and they formed the back bone of the RNVAF.
Don’t forget us (NZ) used them for many years too and now they’re gone 🙁

Sorry, my uploading was giving me trouble…all fixed 😉
From airliners.net…..
What a machine !!!

A shudder to think how much fuel the Lightning would go through getting there….
Perhaps a gliding landing…. 😀
(think they would glide like a brick)

Great pics !!
Are the gliders recreations also ?

wasnt there an episode of The Twilight Zone that used the same idea but had a pax. on an airliner looking out the window and only he could see the ‘gremlins’ pulling bits off of the aeroplane..??
Neil.
I think you might be thinking of the Stephen King movie, “The Langoliers”

Actually after a bit of searching, I found this….
From http://www.edwards.af.mil
A specially modified F-15A Eagle known as the “Streak Eagle” was able to outclimb a Saturn V Moon Rocket to almost 60,000 feet. This same aircraft flew to 98,430 feet (30,000 meters) in 207.80 seconds (less than 3 minutes and 30 seconds). 😮
(Well, it is “historic”… :p )

Just out of interest, is the record currently held by an F-15 ?
Cheers

Speaking of restoring B-29’s, I read once that there are some semi-complete examples at China Lake but are too radio-active for anyone to recover. Is this true ?

With regards to how young is too young,…
When I was 6 months old, my old man and lady used to put me between them down Mum’s jacket on the bike…….in this case it was a Kawasaki Mach 111 500 !!!!!
(A bike not known for it’s good road manners !!! :dev2: )
