Although not a museum fire.
It’s a sad los of the tragic attempt to fly the b-29 kee bird of a greenlad icecap.
Just when the aircraft came at full power a fire broke out in the APU consuming a incredebile piece of aviation history.
(The pic is quite big and I don’t how to make it smaller)

A b-17f tailplane is salvaged from a lake.
Just take a look at the paint it’s still intact after 55 years on the bottem of a lake.

this b-17g is planned to be recovered and restored to flying condiotion.
But the local authorities are not willing to give up this aircraft.
Instead they leave it to rot on the bottem of a lake as a national treasure:confused:

And so there are lot of more airframes in good condition but nobody wants to salvage them.

Strange maybe the dc-4 is homesick:p.
It should have been in Africa.
Maybe your friend mistook the aircraft with the two examples from Aces High
