Aircraft Recoveries – Military History Forum
Fascinating forum, lots of excellent pics.
BUT!
I don’t think publishing photos of bodies is either necessary or desirable, however well-preserved they may be.
Dignity and respect for the deceased seems to have gone out of the window here…
Just my opinion.

Airshow Accidents
Two from my files:
20:09:47
De Havilland Mosquito
Serial No. ?
Crashed at Rempstone, Nottinghamshire during BoB display at Wymeswold.
No further details at present.
20:09:1958
Avro Vulcan

Disintegrated during a high speed, low-level pass at RAF Syerston, Nottinghamshire. Crew and 3 persons on ground killed.
(I believe there are a sequence of still photos, and a film of this accident out there somewhere.)

😮 Amazing thread. A Halifax enquiry ends with the pilot himself answering. Never seen anything like it. 😀
Me neither… Frankly, I’m amazed! 😮 😮
(I wish all my enquiries & research were this fruitful! 😀 )
Seriously, I think I will take a little “diversion” next time I’m out that way…
Thank you very much, Tom, and welcome to the forum!
Excellent work. Congratulations!
I shall place a link to the site on my links page; one of 578’s aircraft came down in ‘our’ area. (MZ519 LK-U.)

Don
Hi,
Referring to Bomber Command Losses Vol. 8, by W R Chorley, I found this one:
27:12:1943
Handley-Page Halifax Mk.II
Serial No. JB788
1652 HCU
Took off from Marston Moor for a fighter affiliation exercise; while waiting for the fighters to arrive, the propeller on the port inner engine sheared off. The pilot ordered his crew to abandon, after all had complied, he force landed the Halifax at 16:15 in a field off Drub Lane, Cleckheaton.
The crew were as follows:
F/S T E Scotland RAAF (injured)
Sgt R Lewis
Sgt D Hopper
Sgt E Riley
Sgt W Weekes
Sgt W Smith
Sgt W Butler
F/S Scotland received a Commanding Officer’s Commendation for his actions.
Best Regards,
Don
I am still a proud Airfixer!
Who else produces a Stirling?! (My favourite RAF aircraft, actually).:D
I built my first kit -a Folland Gnat- at the age of about 5, with a little (OK, a lot!) of help from Dad. I am now [CENSORED] years old, and this little piece of personal history still survives! 😮
After the chaotic years where I bought and built everything and anything I liked the look of, I now have a fairly “themed” collection, mainly models of aircraft that have crashed in my area, built to represent a particular machine before its demise. All are to 1:72 scale.
Photos of these will one day appear on my website.
In my workshop at present, I have the following under construction, only one of the kits is Airfix:
Handley-Page Halifax Mk.II (Revell, to be built as HR727, 51 Sqn.)
Avro Manchester (v. old Airfix Lancaster donor, Contrail? conversion)
Boeing B-52D (Revell)
I only wish now that Hornby will do something about those god-awful Airfix decals…
Vulcan XM575 at East Midlands has its apu and electrical systems run up on occasions 🙂
The engines in said Vulcan are also runnable but sadly they are not allowed to start them due to noise regulations (and to think its kept at a busy airport).
Also the Buccaneer at East Midlands has working engines but is also unable to be run up for the same reason as the Vulcan.
Someone mentioned to me a while ago that it was also due to H&S regulations… B****rds.
Isn’t the Varsity also (still) runnable? I remember it doing engine runs quite a few years ago…
Signed, with pleasure.
Perhaps the numbers 20,40,60,and 80, are presets for the number of bounces….
😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
Seriously though, I give up… Does this guy think that some of us were born yesterday?
No bids… I wonder why?!
Welcome Gingie!
Interesting photos. That ex-Nottingham Daimler Fleetline would be very welcome in my collection…!
Thanks!
I will most likely be at a local crash site paying my respects.
It seems that the meaning of Remembrance Day is still taught in some schools, as when I drove past Repton School earlier today, most of the pupils were wearing their poppies. The same was true yesterday of Trent College in Long Eaton.
There is hope after all, I think…
Absolutely diabolical!
I suppose we can be thankful that the damage wasn’t a lot worse…
These mindless yobs need educating (the hard way if necessary) about WW2 and what it stood for, and above all, RESPECT.
It is about time we got rid of this stupid, P.C., soft, mollycoddling state, which, even to any half-blind fool with a rubber sack over his head, is obviously largely responsible for the appalling state of what was once a great country.
I could rant on for hours about this, but for now, I’ll shut up and get down off my soapbox..
Ignore what they said on BBC South East about the WW2 bomb that got snagged by a fishing boat the report said that it was a 15,000lbs bomb!
Any chance of a link to a clip, please? I could do with a good laugh… 😀 😀 😀
Very powerful and moving photos. Thank you.
Battle of Britain Day
Signed. With pleasure! 😎 😎
