Their Carvairs were based on DC4 airframes:)
QANTAS never operated Carvairs mate!
BRI, QANTAS used the Dc-4 on some short routes, Like out to Norfolk Island here in OZ, ther e were used right up to the late 70’s and were then on sold to a local freight company (Air Express).
Emerson, I’ve just learn’t that the old QF bird you refer to has been extensively damaged in Canada, I suppose anything is repairable but at what price? Pity QF was a bit to slow on that old girl.
I hope they consider bringing back a ex QF Lockheed Electra, that would be nice to see again!
there’s a dc4 in need of a good home already in oz why not buy that one?
is the nasa 747sp an xQantas one?
paul
Paul the Nasa 747SP is ex United Airlines, both QF 747SPs were parted out in the US, I hope they put Rollers on instead of the pratts or GEs that are probably on it!
As to the DC-4 here in OZ rumor has it that this old bird is to be restored to flight status and painted in WARBIRD colours. Not sure what that means? USAF maybe. ANyways who cares as long as she flys hey? And besides another DC-4 in OZ cant be bad? I just hope QANTAS spend the money on some sort of super hanger for all these old birds soon, seems a shame for them to be outside when they are in such good nic.
If those guys there dont want one of them, maybe one could could be sent to Australia I’d love to see one of these beasts in the flesh!
Just a clarification / correction. It’s worth noting that the RAAF Museum is an Air Force Unit based at RAAF Point Cook, an Air Force Base, itself part of RAAF Williams.
The RAAF Museum is in charge of itself; nothing else! Therefore the RAAF Museum did not ‘kick out’ anyone from the hangars on the south side of the aerodrome. The southern side buildings are not part of the RAAF Museum, and do not come under the management of the RAAF Museum but are owned and operated by (IIRC) ‘Defence Forces Property’, and some of them, plus the site as a whole, is listed as a Victorian (but not Australian) heritage site. DFP were responsible for a safety assessment which stated that the Bellman hangars on the Southern Tarmac were unsafe, and while they have been refurbishing the W.W.I buildings on the seaward side, the future of the southern tarmac Bellmans is under question. The RAAF Museum’s buildings are on the northern side of the base.
HTH
Im sorry mate, I should ahve said the RAAF not the museum I was aware of that, In my honest opinion it appears the RAAF dosent give a crap about the museum, they give exibits to the AWM and Temora, is this a a prelude to the hole base closeing who knows, but its looks as though the RAAF is preocupied with property value. just my 2 cents!
Any chance the nose at Camden could be grafted to RF342? To give it an aussie feel of sorts?
Give me a hoy if your in need of help unpacking the aircraft Mark i’m more than willing to offer a hand! Interesting your comments on the RAAF and the Oz government! Very interesting, please dont be offended by my comments it was more of an observation thats all.
Oh and what about the purchase of the nose of the Mark 31 at Camden? Any hope for that, for parts?
Good to hear of the purchase mark, I know your the secretary or the Moorabin museum, however I have one question. Do you believe its the best place for the Lincoln? Wouldn’t it be better for say you and your partner to talk to the B-24 Liberator Memorial and the RAAF Museum and ultimately display these two important aircraft as an annex to the RAAF Museum? Maybe the RAAF could fund the New Hangers since the kincked out everyone? Just a thought/suggestion?
I hope the Lincoln goes to the RAAF museum. They really do need a heavy bomber in their collection, and it might give the RAAF a kick in the ass to build some new hangers for exibition space
