Steve,
Thanks very much for that. I thought the Mossie looked like it had a bulged bomb bay, but wasn’t sure if it was just my imagination and the angle it was at relative to the camera. This is interesting, although as you say doesn’t narrow it down much. Presumably there would have been plenty of B.35s in BAFO Germany in 1946?
I’m afraid you are wrong, 91Regal. There has been an Islander on display at the National Museum of Flight at East Fortune for more than 10 years now. It’s currently in hangars being restored as part of a major redevelopment of the museum but will be in these new displays when they open next year.
Flyer,
Thanks very much indeed for these superb images. PM sent.
Thanks very much indeed to chaza87 for all his efforts, as a result of which I now have a copy of this article. Unfortunately, it is a pdf so I can’t post it here, but I would be happy to email it to anyone who wishes to have a copy. If you want a copy, PM me your email address and I’ll send it on. Oh, and there is an internal cabin photo which might or might not be what you need, Anon.
Thanks for all the replies, guys. Any leads on the actual article, anyone?
Thanks redhill, but I don’t think it’s ordnance. The bulbous end is completely solid with no openings of any kind, so there is nowhere for a fuze to go. There’s also no trace at the other end of stubs for any fins, so unless these were completely removable, there’s certainly not been anything welded on at that end either. Without an opening for a fuze, I don’t see how this could be a bomb.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, but as I’ve already mentioned I now have the image I need. Apologies for not making this clear enough.
Thanks wieesso! These are also good, but I’m primarily looking for something British, and have a Tornado image that is what I need, so I think I’m sorted. Thanks for the suggestions.
Thanks for that, Halcyon. It is a lovely image. Unfortunately, I need a military HUD, otherwise I would probably be exactly what I am looking for.
Robert,
Thanks very much for the suggestion, which is much appreciated. Unfortunately, a still from a video isn’t sharp enough for what I need. I think I’ve managed to find a suitable image, so I should be OK. Thanks again for the idea.
So is there really no-one on this forum who knows where the photo above comes from? I am amazed. The wealth of knowledge on here is amazing and usually answers are forthcoming within an hour or two. I’m really surprised that no-one has seen this photo before or knows which archive it is held by, particularly for a Spitfire picture.
Sorry to resurrect this zombie, but I’ve found this image which confirms there were more aircraft in the scene than shown in the original photo.
These are LF.XVIe Spitfires of No 19 Squadron, probably taken at Molesworth. I’ve been told this is an IWM image but have had no success in finding it on their website. Does anyone know the IWM photo ID for this image as it would be interesting to see the whole photograph and find out the details they have recorded?

Chris,
That’s brilliant, thanks.
Clint,
Thanks, that’s much appreciated.
I’m not great on Bf 109 marks. Am I right in thinking this is a 109E? If so, is it possible to identify the sub mark?
