Although it’s nowhere near Morpeth, is it possible Gibson was referring to Driffield which was bombed during the raid on 15 August 1940? I can’t recall off-hand how bad the damage there was, but is this perhaps a possibility for what he was meaning?

    WillJ,

This is the first time I’ve posted an image, so I wasn’t sure if it would work. It did, so all I can suggest is that you go to your User Control Panel, select ‘Edit Options’. Under the ‘Thread View Options’, make sure that the ‘Show image attachments and [img] code in Posts?’ is set to Yes rather than No. I assume, although I may well be wrong, that you have this set to No, which is why it inserted the image as a link.

If this is not the case, then I’m sure someone else will have the answer.

I’ll join in, with this effort taken whilst helping English Heritage survey a … wait for it … radar site. What a surprise.

If you want to post the date he died, it will be easy to check the loss and give you details of the aircraft, crew and mission.

If you post his name here, someone will be able to check the volumes of Bomber command Losses published over the last few years and should be able to give you details of the aircraft and where shot down, etc.

The closure is to allow aircraft to be moved, so that the main hangar is empty ready for Concorde. It is the only hangar which is high enough to house the Concorde, so everything in there has to be moved, and exhibits from the other hangars moved to make space for the aircraft from the main hangar.

If this all makes sense so far, then the situation when the museum re-opens will be aircraft moved with an empty main hangar awaiting Concorde. It’s not due to go on display until the Festival of Flight in July (or perhaps a week or two beforehand – they’ve not decided yet). Certainly, it won’t be ‘see-able’ until late June at the earliest, I expect.

From the above, you’ll see that when we meet up in April, the museum may be a bit chaotic and some of the aircraft will probably not be on open display. I understand all the rocket collection is being mvoed into storage off-site.

Can I ask for the specific date you’re interested in? You mention circa 1943 in your original post, but the actual date would be helpful.

    Keith,

As I mentioned ealier in this thread, since I work for the National Museums, I’m happy to organise the visit. However, with everything that’s going on I don’t think it will be possible to arrange anything until much nearer the time. That’s why I can’t guarantee that any of the things suggested will be possible because even after the museum re-opens, they will still be busy getting ready for the Concorde arrival.

    Keith,

Thanks very much for your superb offer. I was going to try and find out if it would be possible to get access to the Vulcan cockpit, so if this does prove possible, your tour would be perfect.

On a personal note, I’m no great fan of the Tornado, so I personally don’t fancy an hour-long presentation on the subject. However, if others planning to attend want to see it, I’m sure your offer would be very gratefully accepted.

Either way, I look forward to meeting you on 24 April.

Is there a particular geographical area you’re interested in? The reason I ask is that one of the units I’ve researched (54 OTU) often sent aircraft out to look for ditched aircraft, etc. As such, its possible that the unit you’re looking for might simply be an operational squadron or an OTU, rather than a specific ASR Beaufighter unit.

My only reservation about the meet at present is that the museum may be a bit chaotic in April. I suspect the staff will be somewhat pre-occupied with the Concorde and its logistics and we might not be able to get anything laid on over and above what the ‘normal’ visitor will see. It might also be the case that some aircraft movements might not be completed and thus we might not be able to see some of the aircraft we’re expecting.

I’m not saying all this to try and put anyone off, and I’m certainly going to see what I can organise, but I just thought I should mention all the above just to warn you all that it might not be as good as it should be, due to the timing.

You can tell I’m no mathematician. That should read as seven so far.

Der and Ken Murray have also expressed their intention to come. I make it a total of six so far.

    Alastair,

It’s just dawned on me that your 10 am suggestion contradicts your earlier 1300 hours one. May I therefore throw open the question of what time would suit most people? Would you prefer the morning or afternoon start?
