Hi Cees – that’ll be it then!
Many thanks.
Chris
Hurrifan, despite the ‘Peak District’ title of the web sites in my post, there are some useful items regarding Yorkshire crash sites on both of the web pages.
Chris
Dan, Colin -thanks for the correction – it is a LONG time since I’ve seen it though and am very cearly confusing it with something else then! (I must find that tape now!)
Chris
Hi chaps,
As this is Stirling thread, I thought I’d post a query. Up until a few years ago, large amounts of Stirling III LJ628, 1654 HCU, Wiglsey, were to be found on Uppper Commons, Margery Hill, in the northern Peak District (actually the dip slope, which runs roughly back towards Sheffield, to the east of the Derwent Valley). There were large fragments of the airframe which were, IIRC, recovered several years along with other sections of another high ground Stirling, by the RAF(?) as a restoration project(?).
It was just glancing at this thread which reminded me of it and I wondered if anyone might have any ideas as to where it eventually wound up? I may have some of these details skewed (apart from ‘682’s identity but I’m sure I’ll be told!) so I don’t want to start any rumours.
LJ628 was lost on 21/06/44 – all of the crew survived.
Cheers,
Chris
Does anyone know of any aircraft crash site’s, wrecks, relics, in east yorkshire?, the only one i know of is the heinkel HE 111 that crashed in to reads island and possibly a Junkers JU82? near patrington, there must be more during the war.
landraver – this one’s normally a good start: http://www.peakdistrictaircrashes.co.uk/homepage.htm
Their links page (http://www.peakdistrictaircrashes.co.uk/alanslinks.htm) is good too and they’re a helpful bunch.
Other on here will be able to give you more details as they may well be involved in aviation archaeology. I haven’t trudged around high ground wreck sites in years!
Chris
PS – I hope Junkers Ju82 is a typo!
Whilst conducting a belated ‘spring clean’ of Dam Buster Towers, ‘er indoors found a video buried in all the clutter, and when we put it in the VCR to see what was on it, it turned out to be ‘Over Here’ with Martin Clunes et al. I did’nt recall ever watching it at the time, so me & mrs Dam Buster sat down with a large bottle of wine and a bag of crisps to watch it. It was quite enjoyable in a quirky sort of way, with a bit of a sudden ending we thought. Well aware of some of the aircraft used in the programme, (Sally B, MH434 etc, ) but it left us both with a couple of questions I wonder if our well informed forumites could answer, so, apologies if all this has been covered before but here goes…
a) Does anyone know ehich village was used in the opening shots,
b) Which airfield was used as ‘RAF Lytchmere’? It looked spookily likie ex RAF BINBROOK, and given that ‘Sally B’ still looked to be in her ‘Memphis Belle’ scheme, this might fit in
c) Was the Bf 109 the Hans Ditte one (re-engined Buchon) and whatever happened to that aircraft?
d) Given the odd ending, was there only 1 programme, or have I missed any others?
Again apologies if this has been covered before, and many thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give,
Regards
Keith 🙂
DB – can’t help with aircraft at the moment as I haven’t seen it myself in several years, although it look sas though others are able to do that in a more qualified manner than me! I’m doing the same as yourself and sorting through a whole load of stuff (including vids). With regars to ‘Over Here’, it was in three, one hour episodes, first broadcast on a Sunday evening. If anyone else has a copy to hand, they’ll be able to tell you better – am still looking for mine! However, this might explain why your’s seems to have an ‘odd’ ending. It SHOULD wilnd up with Timothy West and Prunella Scales back in the village (as it started), and West’s character is surrounded by the ‘ghosts’ of many of the characters from his past, which I always found very moving, really. Not much help I know but it certainly filled a three hour tape.
Cheers,
Chris
Hi Chris, just been looking at the shots on your site. Nice pics, but was just wondering what ISO settings you’re using?
Hi Mantog, if you’re referring to the Elviongton shots, they’re not mine, they’re 1 Group’s so you’ll have to ask him (note the copyright notice on each set of photos, in the bottom right hand corner of each shot). As for my images, ISO settings don’t mean much as I use a simple Olympus 3.2 megapixel 3x optical zoom point and shoot jobbie. Actually, I borrow it from 1 Group as I killed my own camera last year and can’t afford a new one yet! However, with a little imagination it produces some presentable images. Cheers for asking though and glad you enjoyed the piccies!
Chris
Thanks, 1 Group.
Didn’t take a camera yesterday; do you have anymore that you could share?
Thanks.
Mark
I didn’t manage to go so I have to rely on these as well. You can see the full collection on our joint web site Noel and Chris’ Aviation Pages. There’s an absolutle belter of the Halifax on there!
Chris
PS. Sorry if I jumped in Noel! C.
Another one for you. Top left (under the title).
“Wings for Victory” is Halifax B.II Series I (Special) BB324/ZA-X, 10 Sqn., RAF Melbourne, Yorkshire, 1942(?)-43. The aircraft was lost on the 23rd June, 1943 on a raid to Mulheim with the loss opf all the crew. It had previously served with 76 Sqn (coded ‘MP’) at Middleton St George, Co. Durham.
Chris
Thanks for the info. Can you help with any of the other aircraft?
Bottom right image is Wellington Mk.II W5376/PH-V, 12 Sqn., Binbrook sometime between 1941-42. Just under the ‘V’ symbol the aircraft’s letter is repeated in morse (…- or ‘dot dot dot dash’) The aircraft went through a succession of units after serving with 12 Sqn: Overseas Aircraft Preparation Unit; 311 Ferry Training Unit; 3 Overseas Aircraft Delivery Unit and finally 104 Sqn (whose codes were EP. I can’t find the aircraft letter at the moment) who were at the time based at Kairouan Cheria, Tunisia. The aircraft was lost on a raid to Panellaria on the 11th June, 1943.
Chris
Thanks for the info. Can you help with any of the other aircraft?
Hang on a mo David…………

Ruhr Valley Express
The “Ruhr Vally Express” is familiar to me. Is anyone able to determine the types of aircraft the art work is attached to?
“Ruhr Valley Expres” is Halifax B.II W7710/LQ-R of 405 (Vancouver) Sqn. RCAF, RAF Topcliffe, Yorkshire, 1942. In front of the train is a guy running along and the word ballon reads “Hey, Georing, R-Robert is here again!”. The aircraft was lost on 2nd October, 1942 on a raid to Flensburg with the loss of all on board (Lost Bombers )

a bit of aircraft
If this counts. Rammstein ‘Reise Reise’ features a battered black box.
[snips from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reise,_Reise%5D
“The airplane accident on which the album is based occurred on the 12 August 1985, nearly 20 years earlier. A Boeing 747, Japan Airlines Flight 123 took off from Haneda airport, Tokyo, and about 30 minutes later, crashed into the side of a mountain. 520 out of the 524 passengers and crew died, and it is still the worst single aircraft disaster in history…”
“…If the CD is rewound back 38 seconds into negative time at the beginning (right before Reise, Reise) and then played, a fragment of the flight recorder of the aforementioned aircraft disaster can be heard. (This can only be done on the European version of the album. The American version has this “hidden” track on the beginning of the album with no rewinding involved.)”
Clearly on theme here, given the band take their name after the Frecce Trocolore’s accident at Ramstein in 1988! Form your own opinions.
Chris
I’ll keep this thread going for weeks – as I go through listing my album collection (about 1200 of ’em) :diablo:
First on my list is an obscure group called Bethnall – their album “Crash Landing” (1978) had a small image of a Dan Air Comet 4 on the front in ‘damaged’ condition.
Like john tixc I can’t reproduce the image here
Roger Smith.
Roger, I managed to find the sleeve after a bit of a trawl (well, an image large enough to post and see!). You’re right though, it is a VERY small image of a Comet!
Chris
lightning ‘spat’
I have removed a small private spat from this thread. PMs are there for that sort of discussion.

That’s why I posted during that spat the ‘I wished I hadn’t posted it [the orignal post at the top]’, er post, which has also been removed! I never dreamed that THAT might happen!
Stuart – you didn’t miss that much! Knowing nothing about the provenance of the Lightning nose in question, I couldn’t (or even WOULDN’T) have joined in any way!
Many apologies Moggy!
