Used to be a nice pub that when I used to frequent there… Done a lot of work to it since.

Would have needed a lot more if the Harrier had hit it!

There are a number of avenues of research to take but the most obvious on the internet is ‘Lost Bombers’: http://www.lostbombers.co.uk/ It might mean a bit of reading though! Another very good record (which shamefully I don’t yet have!) is ‘Bomber Command Losses’ (W. R. Chorley and published by Midland Counties – they’re all here (and runs to several volumes here

A quick trawl though Air Britain might reveal some candidates, given that it seems the concensus of opinion is that type is a Hampden?

I don’t know what the regular headings in/out of East Mids are but another one which has a motorsport theme these days is the former airfield at Darley Moor (formerly the satelit of RAF Ashbourne, housing detachments of 42 OTU), Derbyshire. It’s NNE of Derby, just at the southern tip of the Peak District NP. Its outlines are still distinct from the air at about 1000 feet.

How come i hear that a pilot and Co-pilot escaped ok.

    James

It was originally reported by the BBC that BOTH crew had ejected safely and it was ‘breaking news’ story, after all. It even made the traffic news due to the road closure.

Oooh yikes, to be so labelled! 😀 :eek

Saw them at Music in the Air and they were superb – two ‘Junkers’, 7/8th Se5a, Nieuport and I believe they have a Soppy tripe – they often transit through Sywell

Blue Max may be able to enlighten you more than me – ‘my’ aircraft only have single wings… 🙂 sorry I cant be of more help

    Their website is HERE

TT – that’s been more than helpful! I was looking for a website for ages and found, er, well, diddley squat. Ta! I ‘labelled’ you as from your many posts; I gather you have a close involvement with aircraft. Unfortunatley, ‘oop north’ in Sheff there is very little (nil?) opprotunity to become involved, especially if you don’t drive!. Thanks again.

Daz – I nearly forgot about G-INFO then remebered (remembered, even!) how I’d identified aircraft from a couple of this years shows of varying sizes. Actually, the GINFO link was supplied by another forum memeber so cheers to the forum! It is interesting just how many WW1 (and other) replicas are doing the rounds and for those of us who are just what you might call ‘attendees’ at air shows etc, they do make a refreshing change and I certainly will applaud anyone who builds/maintains/flies such aircraft. Just my thoughts, despite what some other threads have hinted at.

The Lancaster is R5689 VN-N (‘N-Nan’) of 50 Sqn at RAF Skellingthorpe, just outside of Lincoln (now a housing estate). It crashed on approach to Skellingthorpe at Thurlby (Lincolnshire) returning form a ‘Gardening’ sortie 18th/19th September 1942 (the morning of the 19th).

If it is the ‘Pembrey’ (captured 23/6/42) 190, then it’s Fw 190A-3 MP499 of the RAE, which was struck off charge on 18/9/43. I don’t have the good old Midland Counties ‘Air Min’ book to hand at the moment to comment further – feel free to tell me otherwise! (EDIT – IIRC, I’m sure I have seen somewhere, either a previous discussion here or elswhere that bits of this airframe still exist)

The time frame fits that both aircraft were in the air at the same time (supposition mode here chaps!). R5689 was reputedly the most photographed wartime Lancaster so it is not improbable that this might have been a publicity/propoganda shot (unpublished)? In any case, what was the camera ship?! It must have been quite a tail-chase!

    Just a few thoughts.

    Splendid photo colhot.

BE2c owned by G-ASML and Blue Max for starters!

….AND the Iron Funbus at Sywell…

    TT

TT, as you’re part of the aircraft-owning community and clearly I’m not, what do you know of the ‘Great War Display Team’ (some of whose aircraft I shot at Hucknall)? Having just dragged myself back into the attending airshows/museums etc., etc. after a ‘sabatical’ of over ten years, I’m a little out of touch with quite a lot, which I’ll freely admit! They were certainly interesting and very entertaining.

Strongly suspect you’re right there Adrian. Had a quick look at the link from the bottom of that page and the banner image for the web site is interesting in its own right.

Why does it look as thought the pilot, bless him, has a large tank of whatever fuel it is, right behind his noggin? I only say ‘whatever fuel…’ as I noticed that the originating web site remarks that propellants will be a LOX-Alcohol mix.

    A couple more replicas

    Few more for you Daz

    A couple of Bowers FlyBabys (G-BNPV & G-BUYU) dressed as Junkers CL.1’s:

    G-BUYU: http://aviationpages.fotopic.net/p30605662.html
    G-BNPV: http://aviationpages.fotopic.net/p30605464.html

Both at Hucknall earlier this year. Part of a team who gave a spirited display ‘recreating’ WW1 dog-fights over the trenches, including a bit of flower-bombing by the ‘Huns’!

Also there was Sopwith Tr-palen rep N500 (G-PENY) http://aviationpages.fotopic.net/p30605477.html along with a pair of unidentified SE5A’s and an equally unidentified Niueport (bet I’ve spelled that wrong too!).

If you’re talking about replicas on the UK register, try G-INFO

Just by typing ‘SE5A’ into the ‘Aircraft Type or Name’ field yields 11 of ’em in the UK (inlcuding one original, at OW).

    Chris

PS – sorry fo you already knew this info!

Sadly I cannot find a damn thing on the replica glider discussion group anywhere! 🙁

However, there is a company that does indeed wish to produce a rocket-powered version:

Lorks-a-lordy – my bottom’s on fire! Only in America, eh? Interesting project though.

There was an online discussion group for those who wanted to build their own Me163 gliders…..! 😮 😀

I’d only start to be alarmed if someone said they were going to restore to flight a powered version! Mmm, all that wonderful C-Stoff and T-Stoff floating around!

Daz, do you still have a URL for the discussion group?
