Blimey – derelict C-Types? Strikes me as unusual as many of these have found a use of some sort over the years and remain in very good condition (I’m thinking Manby or Hemswell for example). I’ve no idea with this one but very good photos 92fis. Any clues?
Chris.
Thanks Chris, yes, it would’nt be a good idea to post scans, but the pointer is appreciated – I’ll direct my friend. Not Osprey (bit early for them) but Arco pub, and Dick Ward.
Thanks to all.
Keep the suggestions coming!
Hi James, I’ll leave scanning them in that case!
The book though is indeed published by Osprey (1968). The copy I have is the fourth impression (1976) so I can only assume that publishing was taken over from Arco but there is no credit to this effect, although Ward’s excellent illustrations feature heavily for obvious reasons! The ISBN No. is 85405 003 9 and copyrighted to Osprey at 12-14 Long Acre, London.
I’d be interested to find out just in case I have need to hunt any more of these superb little books out.
Chris
Might be worth finding a copy of the Aircam Aviation Series No. 4 “Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I – XVI” published by Osprey (1968). This has a series of colour, port-side views on LFXVIs in a variety of schemes in colour, most of which are one-offs or personal markings. Unfortunately there are no plan views. I could scan and post it, assuming I wouldn’t be in breach of any copyright!
Chris
Auster Fan – I did say distant past!
Thanks for clarification.
Chris
Didn’t he do a helicopter (R-22?) and car (AC Cobra replica) “…is born” series as well at some point in the distant past?
I do remember this from ages ago – what was the aircraft?
Chris
Dean – #277. Late Expansion Period is it? Is one of those hangars a J-Type? Still doesn’t mean I’m any nearer to getting it though! Does your ‘Location’ give a clue?
Flumoxed on #269! (Is that how you spell ‘flumoxed’?)
Chris
pongo – inverry is right. It was on ITV 1 LAST Tuesday at 23:00, unless it’s a two-part jobbie, as I see it’s listed again, certainly for the Yorkshire region (I’m hoping a mate has taped it!). I’ve seen these before and you normally have a little aviation – but not much. Mind you, if you’re into classic motoring/motorsport (hands up here for the motorsport!) then it may not hold much interest. It’s an event I’d personally love to go to. Bit pricey though.
Chris
That’s VERY weird!!!

Cypherus,
Contact the RAF Museum for a copy of the record site plan. They’ll probably have one for Brunty. I used my copies of Waltham and Kelstern when I was playing with FS scenery creation.
Chris
About time! Clue, a squadron was based here that achieved it’s fame flying from an expansion period airfield in the same county!
Yes – I have to give in on #241 WebPilot, unless you have a less cryptic clue, such as which County it’s in! I’m clearly after scoring easy points!!
#254 I think it’s Woodhall Spa.
Better be right as I’m back home after our team won the local pub quiz comprehensively tonight! 😀 Watch it be bloody well wrong now!
Chris
Heh. #241 – runways not paved. There’s an Italian flavour to parts of the camp…
Blimey, that sounds cryptic!
I’m useless at crosswords or quizzes, which is a shame as it’s the local pub quiz tonight 😮
Anyone have an airfield thesaurus to hand?!
Any other subtle hints as to #241 across?
Runways ‘not paved’ – PSP?
You’re enjoying this, aren’t you – you vicious person, you!
Chris
WebPilot – I only have to nip to the shop for five minutes! Yep – Darley Moor. Home of 42 OTU and now the Darley Moor motorcycle racing track.
#241 – grass surface?
Chris
More clues………………………?
Dean, I’ve just had a quick look at Flash Earth and this explains where the little cross hair comes from on some of the photos!
Chris
WP – I’m not using Google Earth, I’m using Windows Live (http://www.live.com/?searchonly=true) When you get there, there’s a search field and below it are some links – hit the ‘Local’ link and type in your location query. It’s fairly easy to pick up how to use it and the res is superb. Some areas – but not all – can have a res. as high as 25 yards. Belive me, makes looking at those rural areas not covered by GE a lot easier!
Dean – another Memory Map user, eh?
Anyway, another one. Obscure-ish, I think and still used for a variety of activities today. It was only ever a satellite and only an OTU. That’ll give it away! (Well Webpilot will get it!).
