Here here Kev, well said! Low cost airlines have only added to the choice in European air travel, most certainly not taken away from it.
For example, last year you would not have been able to fly from London direct to Bratislava, now easyJet, Austrian, and SkyEurope all offer the route, now that’s what I call choice! In addition, notice how only two of those are low cost airlines.
The same goes for Prague from Gatwick, last year no one operated the route, now we’ve got BA, CSA, easyJet, Smartwings and bmibaby (although bmibaby are dropping the route). It’s all enhancing the choice and making travel more affordable, excellent news all round surely?

Milan Bergamo is actually closer to Milan than Malpensa, and Ryanair aren’t the only airline to call it Milan, in fact it’s actually officially assigned as Milan’s third airport and has been for many years prior to the arrival of the locos.

With regards to the Fokker 70’s at LCY, Air France operated them into the airport for a short while, but that’s been it so far. Why KLM continue to use the F50 instead of F70 into LCY I don’t know!!

Shamrock, you have posted yet another biased and completely uneducated post. I know several guys who are in the right hand seat at Ryanair and they are having a dreadful time of it, many of them are saying they’d rather be back at Oxford Aviation flying Seneca V’s without being paid as opposed to being paid a pittance, being given no respect, no stable roster and being messed about every hour of every day. The Ryanair staff are really having an awful time of it and I recommend you step away from you’re Michael O’Leary propaganda and look at the situation as it really is.
Ask any of the guys actually in the industry or in training and you will be told exactly how good Ryanair really are.

The IFE isn’t going to be seat back fitted or drop down screens. Each aircraft is initially going to have 24 laptop style units which can be handed out around the cabin, more will be brought in if needed. So the weight implications are minimal.
Personally I would have probably have used this prior to buying a portable DVD player. When I flew with Ryanair to Rome last year I would imagine the flight would have passed a lot quicker with the IFE.
Judging by Ian’s post, would it be fair to say that it would be worth making the effort to actually walk into each airlines HQ and hand in my CV in person to the chief pilot etc?
Wow, some very encouraging stories there guys! V jealous moondance!! I’m still very seriously considering just blitzing it now and getting everything done as fast as possible. I’m pretty sure I don’t want to carry on with the APP now due to several professional and personal factors.
Just worrying about how to get that job at the end of it now. Any tips guys?
Just out of interest, and don’t feel compelled to answer, where did you guys do your training and how long did it take you to get employment once you’d finished?
It really does strike me that an airline looks at a low hours pilot with the following order of priorities:
1) Does he/she have any contacts in the airline
2) Did he/she get a first time IR pass
3) How does he/she do in terms of CRM etc
4) Where did he/she train
So what I really need to do is meet a lot of guys who can slip me into a job 😉
Ah now you see both of you have reinforced something I have believed since about a week after I took the APP selection. I really am starting to think it’s over hyped and that as long as I get my license quickly, from respected trainig providers the airlines aren’t going to bother too much where it came from.
With regards to the self funded type rating it’s something I’m very reluctant to do, although if I change over to modular I’ll have enough capital to get two (maybe 737 and A320!!!), but as you say a type rating and line experience are totally different things…..ah decisions decisions!!
Sun-Air operate BAe ATPs on behalf of BA to Billund as well as J41s and J31s. So the aircraft isn’t actually owned or operated by BA, it’s just a franchise. There are still a few ATP operators, the newest is FlyJem just down the road at Liverpool.
