    Connie at Wroughton.

There is a Connie at Wroughton,I was Mate of the ferry that carried it from Dublin to Fleetwood,it had been arrested/abandoned at Dublin airport,it was a freight conversion with a large door on the port side aft which I was told had been intended as a racehorse transport. This happened about 28 – 30 years ago,I later saw it at Wroughton at a Science Museum open day after it had been re-assembled.

    B24 1958/1968

On the 28 February1968 A USAF B24 jettisoned its two external drop tanks over the Airbase a parked B24 had a nuclear bomb on board causing a Alleged nuclear accident i have read the accident reports .Our Fire Section responded to this emergency i was off duty on that day but i did speak to the crew involved any more information would be helpful

Surely would be B47 or B52 in one of those years, not a Liberator !!

I can remember reading that RR built Merlins were hand fitted and that Ford and Packard used mass production techniques which ensured all components were the same. There is a Packard Merlin at Duxford in the US hangar, there is a plaque near the engine which specifies numbers built by the 3 companies.

Yes Springers,Bob Swallow, who lives near me witnessed the crash as a child. He said he heard a `crack` and turned to see the complete tail falling off the glider ” like it had been cut clean with a knife”.The Stirling tug circled for a bit then returned to Keevil, both pilots then jumped in a jeep and drove back to the crashsite ,but there was nothing they could do.Charlie Padfield lives quite close to me.

I have just unearthed a book entitled ‘High Littleton & Hallatrow a pictorial history’ which has pictures of the Padfield family, the crash and letter are mentioned.

Thankyou OneEighthbit….The Glider caught fire on crashing with `explosive charges` going off.

My late mother was a witness to this crash which occurred in a field between Hallatrow and Paulton. She was walking with me and my brother,I was 2 and my brother 2months.I was told there was a Memorial at the crash site.My father was based in Hallatrow at the time in the RMP and my mother was staying in the village.I can remember Archie Padfield who was foreman with a local haulage firm.

I can remember being told there was an explosion in the air and that the towing aircraft followed the glider down to check the crash site. There used to be an annual memorial service at the Memorial.
