My dad was at radlett with the Victor bomber as a test pilot

Radlett had two distinct parts, production at the Radlett end and testing at the Park Street end.I lived in Park Street and can remember Hastings,Hermes,Victor,Herald & Jetstream aircraft being at the airfield.Victors running up at 0700 is a noisy memory.Staff from the test end used to use my local,The Red Lion, after work.Behind the wind tunnel at Park Street was a Halifax, without outer wings and engines,it appeared to have three fins!! I later discovered the centre fin was actually a section of laminar flow wing.At the end there were Victors awaiting a contract for conversion to tankers which never came. They were eventually flown to Manchester,I think, after many months on the ground and making them airworthy for the move cost us taxpayers a fortune.

Thanks – that’s a good start. Sad about its demise, though, but I suppose it was difficult to justify 3 “V” bombers in the circumstances and so the Valiant had to be sacrificed. I remember Wittering being a busy place as I think it held a large stock of nuclear weapons and I vividly rmember a bunch of us teenage cadets being taken though concete compounds and shown an “Atom bomb”!

Is the only one left at Cosford?

In 1957/8 ? I was at a CCF summer camp at Cottesmore which was full of brand new Victors and security kept us well away from them, they had an Anson and 2 Chipmunks for cadet flying experience. We were taken to Wittering and allowed full access to the Valiants although I don’t remember being shown any bombs.I’m pretty sure Group Captain J.Johnson was Station Commander at Cottesmore.

I’ve just checked,Johnnie Johnson was at Cottesmore from 1957.

I remember seeing three Hurricanes flying around quite leisurely at Duxford ten years ago. ‘Twas brilliant.

And, I think, TWENTY Spitfires?? 😮

I seem to recollect there were 10 Mustangs at that show although 1 went US with oil leak.Including the Lancaster I think there were 36 Merlins/Griffons in the air at one stage.Stunning noise.:D:D

But it makes one wonder what they were shipping that caught fire? Because of someone’s negligence perhaps, a whole bunch of people’s stuff destroyed.

Could be simply spontaneous combustion, hazardous cargos have to be carefully segregated,in the UK we used to have the ‘Blue Book’ to refer to,now there are numerous IMO regulations to refer to.I can remember carrying a very greasy type of wool from Australia which had to be carried on deck due to the fire risk, pre container days of course.I’m showing my age.

    Fooled

Saw it fly past my house about 12 59. Awesome! I still cant believe how quick it is to get from my house (East London way) to the mall. As they left my eye sight, they appeared on the telly!

I downloaded the route map which seemed to show the track about half way between Hadleigh and the A12 and parked in an appropriate place!!The flypast appeared dead on time but flying a good distance to the South,I guess they were following either the A12 or the railway!!

    Wellingtons at Elstree.

I can remember recently browsing through a history of Elstree which stated that Wellingtons were towed up the A41 from Elstree to Watford for repair at the premises of Odhams Press,I seem to recollect there were pics of this taking place.
