In Sweden we have three airworthy DH-100s: SE-DXS, SE-DXY and SE-DXZ.
Plus four two-seaters. That makes 11 Vampire seats in total 🙂

Although deliveries of the C/D-versions just started the number of Gripens in service are actually decreasing…

And after 2005 the Swedish Air Force will consist of only two frontline units, with approx two squadrons of Gripens each.
Plus one squadron or so for national and export training. That’s it.

    It’s a 100% money [=political] issue.

All JA 37s were withdrawn in 2004. A few AJSFs and also SK 37Es remain in service for this year, due to the lack of such capabilities in the early Gripens.

After 2005 hopefully one Viggen will be flown by the Historical Flight. Some will also be used as test platforms.

I’m not going to vote for one or the other, as I think they vere designed rather different for different needs. But when it comes to looks the Viggen is one true mighty bird!

The latest JA 37 D(i) conversions are in some aspects actually better than the JAS 39A. When scrapped some electronic equipment and avionics are put in use in the production of JAS 39C!

More Viggen shots on my website… and more to come.

I used my ancient Canon EOS 5 with 28-105 and 75-300 mm lenses for the Viggen pics. Fuji Provia 100F film, the finest on the market I think, scanned in my (also ancient) Canon slide scanner and finally slightly sharpened in Photoshop.

Digital cameras are great, but they’re not as good as slide film… yet! (at least not the affordable ones)
