Development costs vs. purchase price
I’m a bit of a worrier over F35. Will it do what its supposed to? Will it be cheap to buy? Will it be cheap to maintain? Will the spiral in development costs result in aquisition costs spiraling? And many others.
But, putting on my happy face for a second.
There is actually a rationale for US ponying up for most of the development costs and selling units on at or near planned cost.
US industry is gaining the experience with ‘5th Gen’ (whatever that means) and if it wants to be world leader will have to do so. Various partners aren’t getting that experience and knowledge. On top of which arms sales seem to take a special place in economics.
So the bright positive idea that maybe JSF will sell at the proposed price tag doesn’t seem so daft to me after all.
Nimitz and co are SUPERCARRIERS
i.e. when conceived of and designed they were of a different order of magnitude than CARRIERS.
It is bizarre to look at SUPERCARRIERS as being the benchmark for CARRIER and calling anything else nambypambylimpwristedandtoolsmallfor thejob
Wouldn’t it be incredibly funny if Japan bought Typhoon? :diablo:
If by incredibly funny you mean fncking cool then yes 🙂
There have been a few reports about Japan seriously considering ‘phoon if Congress won’t let them have Raptor. But is that only a bargaining tool? We can but guess.
‘phoon would look awesome in JASDF colours
Plus I’d expect some beautifully ingenious, nay unexpected, solutions to problems which Eurofighter might not realise that they even had.
a la
Internal cannon – Mauser 27mm has no commonality with rest of JASDF so redesign for 20mm six gun? 25mm five gun? Or some kind of podded external cannon with OBS capability?
AESA – use Captor, part fund AESA, provide own, provide expertise for joint venture?
I don’t share the low opinion of the Absalon but I’m really not sure why the US did not pursue this idea further http://www.shipbucket.com/images.php?dir=Never%20Built%20Designs/USA%20FFG%20TSSE%20Regional%20Deterrence%20Ship%201992.gif
Very neat birds. The nose in almost unbelievably long. 🙂
Which reminds me. I assume that someone has thought of and dealt with the issue of muzzle flash right in the pilots FoV?
Well done the Aussies for getting half the fleet wired for conversion to Growler
Why on earth would they?
Coz we owned most of France
And they owned most of Britain
Do you really think it’s likely that the RN is going to get SSGNs?
Not in the slightest. Is there anything I (or anyone else) has typed which has suggested that I/they do?
And what is this obsession with Tomahawks,
This is an armchair enthusiasts forum and there has been lost of footage of Tomahawk being used in anger. Also RN already has Tomahawk. But we do like to buy lots of small buys of different items of kit so with Tomahawk in RN, Apache (:)) in RAF expect next Cruise Missile to be purchased for UK to be Brahmos
Aster missiles can’t be quadpacked
No but rumours abound that CAAAMMMMM will do
Fireshadow is also designed to be fired from VLS, and is going to be a damn sight cheaper than tossing around TLAMs
Indeed, if it works and can be bought in economical numbers. But there is that range issue you mentioned
IF we’re just talking LACMs then the 4 Ohio SSGNs would qualify as arsenal ships I’d think.
Yes they would and they have the enormous virtue of stealth.
Not only does this make them FAR more survivable than a skimmer could ever be but also provides a deterrent effect in that no foe is likely to be certain whether one of the Ohio SSGNs is parked in range or not.
In my opinion if they army wants cost savings what about pulling out of Germany?
Or capping pension for one star and above at Captain RN or equivalent (rather than retiring on full salary as pension)
Or binning ceremonial duties
Or stop continually going for low rate production, little or no export market, tailor made gold-plated drain pipe solutions
Or stop upgrading AFVs which won’t be deployable even after the upgrade
Or perhaps most importantly realise that denigrating programmes in the other services (whether we end up with 2 or 3) won’t get more money for one’s own service. The money saved will not stay in MoD. That’s not the way the treasury works.
Yes, “the Martians” :dev2::dev2::dev2:
Only the U.S. to buy 55 vessels of 3,000 tons, armed only with a 57mm gun, few machines-guns and a RAM …. and which costs 650 million $ pieces 😀At this price, in Europe, there are heavily armed frigates with 76 or 127mm gun, 32 VLS, 8 SSM missiles, generaly a CIWS system, torpedo, 1 or 2 helico
A heavily armed LCS cost probably 1-1,2 billion…..the price of a destroyer 😀
LCS= A patrol boat armament, on a frigate hull, for nearly the price of a destroyer 😀
I’m not a big fan of LCS and much of what you write is IMO on the button but LCS does bring 2 SH60s, and is a small platform to provide such an aviation capability.
A Bel and hence a Decibel is a ratio of signal loss.
i.e. the more decibels the quieter
So a 110 dB submarine is quieter than a 100 dB chainsaw
Its also a logarithmic ratio (base 10) so a 10 dB difference is a significant difference
I think most of us describe the C3 as an OPV. Which it should be, we all recognise that we need hi low mix rather than what we have now and the C3 needs to provide this even if it mixes this with “Mine Countermeasures/Hydrographic”
Indeed to be serious for a moment
Hydrographics is pretty much THE most important task for skimmers (coz without that up-to-date data SSNs and SSBNs are stuffed)
Mineclearing/hunting/countermeasures has been one of the RN’s raison d’etre (leading to more than one US commentator post GulfWorldWarI asking why the USN didn’t have one less CVN in order to field a proper MCM flottila)
At present very expensive, rare, high end units are being deployed where an OPV would be more appropriate.
But C3 has been identified under the Future Surface COMBATANT umbrella.
With the current (and it will only get worse) squeeze on fleet (flotilla tbh) numbers C3s are going to be alone in hot areas. Doing so without a minimum level of armament is sacrifice. Doing so without the ability to upgun if things are gonna get hot is foolish.
For myself I am a big fan of softkill over hardkill (in part because then one is less likely to run out of rounds!) but there is no guarantee that this will be cheaper than missiles.
The MoD fetish for FFBNW and ‘flexibility’ and ‘capability’ could be made to work for us rather than against.
I noticed this –
Maybe that’ll persuade people to stop describing it in frigate terms, with frigate armament – but I doubt it. 🙁
Quite right. We’re all being far too timid
Hyuga for C1
Ocean for C2
Absalon for C3
Where do you fit the internal weapons?;)
Internally
Sorry Swerve beat me to it, when I started typing it wasn’t there yet
Fixed that for you
