there’s a brief description of underwater submarine communication in Clancy’s Red Storm Rising, when captain Dan McCafferty …

Clancy huh? Is he really considered to be a reliable source these days? When I read SSN during my days in Navy I had the greatest laugh of my time. What that man is producing is either propaganda or wishful thinking regarding US submarines capabilities.

    A short reflection regarding GNP;

In europe school and healthcare tends to be less expensive (or even free of charge) than in US. This makes the GNP go down quite a bit in european countries, since they’re paid by taxes and therefore not regarded as an income in GNP calculations. In US they are.

The cost of free healthcare/insurance in Sweden is three (!) times bigger than the armed forces per year. Add public schools and universities (which are totally free of charge) and you’ll understand that it’s quite important to know how these GNP’s are calculated. Otherwise, you’ll never be able to compare US GNP with Swedish GNP for example.

“Is this just a way of getting more money out of government, or will these things have some useful capability that a manned aircraft doesn’t have?”

Ofcourse they will, that’s the whole point of ’em.
A ucav can take on extremely dangerous missions that you normally wouldn’t allow your pilots to. They also benefit from not having a pilot onboard, which means lower weight and possibly lower drag (no canopy, no cockpit, no displays, no oxygen etc.). At last, but not least, they can pull a LOT more than 9g’s. 9g limit of todays aircraft isn’t necessarily due to airframe stress but due to pilots getting black-outs.

I think this says it all, Aurel and Fonk:

“MIDS-LVT is a multinational, multiservice cooperative program sponsored by five NATO countries (United States, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain) with the US Navy as lead service for US applications and overall program manager.”

    Source: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/systems/mids-lvt.htm

France may be a proud member of the team but their american colleagues are in charge of the program.

Having said that, I still see a bright future for pan-european projects such as Neuron. And I definetely think that this is the way to go, in order to compete wih our american friends. In 2015-2020, JSF will be the frontrunner, not Gripen, not Rafale, not Eurofighter. If europe is interested in being competetive at this time, they better come up with something like a UCAV. If they do, they have a chance of regaining the current lead.

“With a purchase of 126 aircraft, I doubt the Swedes would want to miss the bucks that come with it”

I understand that you are not very familiar with swedish export regulations and swedish politicians. It was ruled out earlier, that exporting Gripens to Pakistan was out of the question due to the tense in the region (ie Kashmir) – therefore the same goes for India.

And as Anders said in an earlier post; going against all these laws would cost the government its power due to the fact that they are dependent on the greens and the left wing who both opposes swedish arms exports in any kind.

What war is Brazil ready for?

The cold war is over, Lula isn’t likely to join a US led expeditionary warfare in arabic countries and the war on drugs will do just fine without Su-35’s. So I say again, what war is Brazil ready for?

Or are Brazil about to become yet another country that wants stuff to boast about (example: carriers) like so many other asian countries? That would be sad, because military spending should be equal to ones needs since there are far better ways to spend money in Brazil at the moment (ie Favelas).

I would say that Flight International is way more interesting, and I agree with you that AFM doesn’t cover all the news and events in europe. I haven’t bought AFM for months because of this very reason.

I don’t want to read about US buying 30 more F-16 for attrition or look at ten thousand photos of vanilla F-18’s, but what I do want to read is test flights of different aircraft, like they did with the gripen for a couple of years ago. They actually went to Sweden and flew the aircraft from the backseat. Why not get into the backseat of a Rafale and give us 10 pages of interesting read about that?

“****, how can a banana republic dictator like Gbagbo can be so stupid???”

I was just wondering the same. They aren’t exactly superior to the armed french forces. Maybe they have an upperhand today, but definetly not tomorrow if the french call for some backup. There’s a swedish say about this; arrogance predicts fall…

During shallow water operations, a diesel sub always has the possibility to shut down the diesel engines and run on electricity. If the sub stays still at the bottom of the sea, running on batteries – it’ll be almost impossible to find it.

The problem with using nuclear subs in this kind of tactis is that you always need water to be pumped in order to cool down the reactor systems. And pumping cooling water means producing noise.

Why do you guys think US Navy hired a complete Gotland-class (AIP) submarine for ASW-training purposes?

What I mean is that you shouldn’t overestimate a LA-class submarines chances in shallow water operations. That’s acompletely different ball game then what it was originally designed for…

Airbus produces very good good civil aircraft with the help of massive corporate welfare but is yet to produce a definitive, designed from the ground up military aircraft even though it has been trying for 20 years.

I guess that’s where Boeing excels, since 747 was developed as a military transport aircraft? Or was that just a trick in order to get the whole development paid by american taxpayers? Talk about subsidy…

Well, did you know this as well? :diablo:

“Swedish submarine will conduct exercises with USA

A swedish submarine of Gotland-class including crew shall conduct exercises with US Navy during one year in USA. That was decided by the swedish government today (note: 28:th of october 2004).

The purpose is to develop the ability to cooperate in joint international operations. …”

    Source: http://www.svt.se/texttv/116.html (in Swedish)
Nice done by the social democrats, the left wing and green parties refused to let a foreign power hire the submarine since Sweden is supposed to be a neutral country, so they simply call it an exercise and send the sub anyway. God knows how they are going to get paid though…
