RE: Model aircraft.
I have a few Corgi models: a Lancaster, Spitfire, Hurricane, Mosquito, EE Lightning, P-51 (Old Crow), Harrier and Hunter all in 1:72 scale…
Corgi recently introduced a range of “baby” models (the same quality as the 1:144 and 1:72 ranges but usually sell for a fiver) Of these I have the Spitfire, Corsair, P-51 and P-38…
I said for years that I was not going to buy any aircraft models, then Corgi released that BBMF set last year and that was that…of course a staff discount in the Musuem shop helps 🙂

Geforce…don’t forget Ian Van Dahl and Lasgo for Belgium too…and Dee Dee too I think (all are trancy euro disco pop for those unfamilar with them)

Phil…we have two photographers from the Photograph Archive based at Duxford who basically do the job that you described, plus the archive side of things as well…I believe they have counterparts in London who perform similar tasks down there…

Phil…the IWM has an entire Photogragh Archive, based both here at Duxford, and in London…Like the Film and Video Archive, the Photo Archive forms part of the Collections Division, with the majority of items stored here at Duxford…if any vacancies arise I will let you know the details 🙂

Well Steve has already posted the IWM Job Vacancies link that I was going to post…it is certainly worth keeping an eye on this page as it is regularly updated with all the currently available positions at all five branches of the IWM…
As I am sure I have told/bored you all before, I decided while I was still at uni that I wanted to forge a career in an aviation museum somewhere in the country upon finishing my degree…Duxford was always my first choice as it always has been my favourite museum, and I was lucky enough to get the first job I applied for here…as my other half and I had no ties upon leaving uni (e.g. mortgage, kids at school etc) we moved up to Duxford and here we still are 🙂
One piece of advice/thought I will give you though Ant, is to consider how your own personal interest in aircraft might enhance/hinder your perfomance in a job say as Conservation Assistant in Hanger 5…I found that it is possible to love aircraft too much as far as doing the job is concerned…while I was a Museum Assistant here, I found that the Museum was ceasing to be the special place it has always been to me and was just becoming “work” (yes I know some people are never satisfied!) Now I work on the “other side of the road”, the Museum has become that “special” place again…its lovely to wander over to Hanger 3 at lunchtime and take a peek at the Breitlings or check on the progress of various restoration projects on the go…(I hope all this makes sense!)

Personally, I would love to see the Shackleton restored to her former glory and kept under cover, preferably alongside the Lancaster and York as a testimony to the Avro Company and A.V. Roe…but unfortunately, I’m not Director of the Imperial War Museum 🙁
I will do my best to get some more info on future restoration projects and report back when I do…

Tony…I actually have no idea how long she will be staying at Duxford, I hope it will be for some time yet, as I would like to see her flying again 🙂 (I didn’t think that as the “star” of Legends this year she really had an opportunity to “shine” in the air…weren’t all her passes with other aircraft…no solo passes from her?)

First of all, yes, the Hastings is owned by the IWM…
With regards to the Victor, as I understand, the Victor although looking rather tatty on the outside is not as far gone as the Shackleton structurally speaking…she IS on the list for restoration, for the past couple of years conservation work has been concentrated on aircraft for the AAM, when this is completed next month, attention should turn to the British/Commonwealth aircraft collection…so hopefully before too long the Victor will be restored to her former greatness…
Unfortunately though, the last I heard, the Shackleton is too far gone to be saved as a complete aircraft…although as much will be SAFELY done for her will be done…if the Museum thought she could be preserved as an entire aircraft I am sure we would…surely it is better to have a part of a Shackleton preserved then to see a whole aircraft scrapped? Ok in an ideal world we would preserve all aircraft but sadly, this isn’t an ideal world…:(
