RE: F15 … and B-24??
Well I’m not surprised that the Fighter Collection are twitchy are you?
And as for the OFMC…well they pride themselves on flying excellent and SAFE displays that don’t push the limits of the aircraft…
RE: F15 … and B-24??
Snoopy…sounds good to me 😉
RE: Underwater Wellington
Interesting info there Ant 🙂
RE: Another legend has passed on
Rest in peace Gabby
And a very lovely thought, Moggy
RE: Message for Ashley.!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-02-02 AT 00:50 AM (GMT)]Hi Peter :)…KB889 was completed before I began working at Duxford but I’ll see what I can find out for you…
As for her engines…well Duxford is renowned for it’s restoration of aircraft and great care is taken to restore aircraft as authentically as possible…I know that unlike some of the other aircraft in the collection, KB889 has got all four engines fitted, but I’m not sure of the state of them…
And can you imagine my surprise one day when I was dusting our MK24 and lovingly patted her nose, only to hear a resounding echo…no engine!!! I was rather miffed…;)
RE: ‘Night Flight’-The Verdict
Lancman…my sentiments exactly…I was hoping for some recognition of East Kirkby in the credits but nothing! I thought the raid scenes were well done and the plot was something different…I’ll give it the Ashley seal of approval 😉
RE: F15 … and B-24??
Snoopy…well Moggy has answered your question for you 🙂 As far as asking me questions about Duxford, I will do my best to answer any question put to me about Duxford, but sometimes I cannot give the information I would like to give because I am an employee of the IWM…I try to be as factually correct about Duxford as I can using my many sources here at Duxford, but when I express an opinion about Duxford on this forum it should be regarded as my opinion, not the official IWM line! 🙂
But any questions folks, I’ll be glad to try and answer if I can 🙂
RE: F15
Well first of all…I believe the F-15 is not going to go on display inside the AAM…well at least that’s the last I heard on the Duxford grapevine! If I can find out some more, I’ll let you know 🙂
As for moving aircraft into the AAM…well that involves removing all the glass windows bit by bit and storing them on the grass by the side of the museum…then rearranging the aircraft already inside the AAM, and then rolling in the new additions…the whole process is expected to take about 10 weeks or so, as it’s such a lengthy procedure…
This spring, for the first (and only I suspect!) time, the museum will be going through this process to add the B-24 and the Blackbird…needless to say due to space restrictions this means that a couple of the current inhabitants will be “taking to the skies” inside the AAM…I do not know which and I am not prepared to discuss possibilities so please do not ask…:)
RE: Back
I’d like to see the former Duxford based ‘Lizzy’ that Kermit Weeks bought and stuck in a hanger return to Duxford…with the demise of the Belgian Lizzy, the wonderful sight of 3 Lizzies with the Blenheim and Gladiator at Flying Legends 1998 will never been seen again 🙁
RE: Duxford North.
Sadsack…any changes that are made at Duxford will always be sympathetic to the unique atmosphere at Duxford…I have visited many museums and realised that the atmosphere and spirit of Duxford is unique, as many people do…:)
The WWI hangers are listed buildings and are safe…I believe the buildings on the north side are listed too…
RE: Duxford North.
Yes, the atmosphere really is something different here…over Christmas it snowed here at Duxford and I was the only one at work…I had the whole of the north side to myself…and if I turned in the right direction the 21st century just slipped away…
It was as though I had gone back in time to RAF Duxford, Christmas 1940…it was a lovely crisp morning…the buildings dusted with snow…sparkling in the sunshine…if I looked and listened very hard, I could see the WAAFs coming out of their living quarters and heading to the dining quarters for breakfast…the airmen lined up on the parade ground for square bashing…the pilot with a broken leg looking out of his window in the sick quarters watching the men on parade…the NAAFI stocking up for the day…the officers settling down to breakfast in the Officer’s Mess…trips being made to the ration store…and the sound of Merlins starting up in the distance…
This place is full of memories…and I’m proud of it 🙂
RE: ‘Night Flight’ on next weekend!!!
Does anyone know if it will be released on video? Just typical of the BBC to finally put it on and then stick the news in the midle of it…grrrrrrr….
RE: The
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-01-02 AT 05:02 PM (GMT)]Hi Sadsack :)…I’m the “Duxford Correspondent”…I work for the Imperial War Museum’s Film and Video Archive, based on the “other” side as you put it 🙂 There is plenty ‘done’ with these buildings…several IWM Departments within the IWM Collections Division are based here…some of the buildings are leased by private operators…and there’s all sorts of bits kept in safe storage over here…
There are no plans to open the “other” side to the public at present…sorry 🙂
RE: Flying experience
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-01-02 AT 10:34 AM (GMT)]Hmmmph…well I’ve flown in a Dragon Rapide and have a flight over Duxford in an Auster arranged 🙂
Aircraft I’ve been in though…Lancaster, Spitfire, Vulcan, Sea Vixen, Vampire, Sunderland, B-17 (Sally B :)), Catalina, Lysander, B-52, Dakota, Hercules, Nimrod and most of the civil airliners at Duxford…
The three I really want to fly in are Spitfire, Blenheim and Lysander…well and the Lancaster too…and the Hunter…and so on 🙂
RE: Re.surviving Lanc bits
Lancman…my neighbour Alec was mid upper gunner on ‘Old Fred’ for 21 trips…he and the crew wrote a book about their exploits…I’ll see what I can find out for you 🙂
