Iran set to acquire S-300PTs from Belarus

    17 January 2008

Amid conflicting reports that Moscow has agreed to sell Iran a number of S-300 low-to-high altitude air-defence systems emerging at the end of 2007, Jane’s has learned that Tehran is actually in the final stage of negotiations with Belarus for the acquisition of two surplus trailer-mounted towed S-300PT (SA-10A ‘Grumble’) systems.

These systems were, until recently, deployed near Minsk as part of Belarus’s operational air-defence configuration, and include command-guided Fakel 5V55K missiles (with a range of 47 km) and the baseline 5V55R semi-active radar and Track Via Missile (TVM) guided missile (range 75 km).

Defence industrial sources in Belarus told Jane’s that although the value of the contract has yet to be finalised, Belarusian negotiators are asking for USD140 million for the two systems (including parts, maintenance and training). The sources noted that while that figure is considered high for older S-300PT systems (the S-300PT entered Soviet service as far back as 1978), the inflated price reflects an awareness of Iran’s urgent requirement for such systems and its consequent willingness to pay well, enhanced by the intense international scrutiny placed on Tehran’s efforts to acquire missile technologies and the country’s difficulty to fast-track acquisition of such systems from other sources.

Further, the price also reflects the risk involved for Minsk in releasing such systems to Tehran – particularly in its political relations with Moscow.

The sources confirmed that after the contract is finalised, the S-300PT systems would be transferred from Belarus to Iran in semi-knocked down (SKD) condition aboard a number of cargo aircraft. These flights will fall within the framework of the many regular flights (including military aircraft) between Iran and Belarus, and will include the transfer of spare system parts as required by Iran.

IAF planes are new one with PS-90 engines but some foreign customer is financing A-50.

The preparations for the series modernization of Russian AWACS is completed

The Russian concern of radio construction of “Vega” completed the complex of scientific research and experimental design works on the modernization of the aircraft of distant radar patrol, detection and guidance A-50, reports “Interfax”. “successful completion R & D makes it possible to begin the series modernization of the combatant aircraft A-50 of Russian VVS”, explained to agency source in the defense- industrial complex.

First of all, innovations it is touch uponed the “major modification of radar complex”. Furthermore, analog information processing will be substituted to the digital.

In the course of the already carried out official tests that modernized by A-50completely confirmed design characteristics.

As a result of modernization the technical flight and combat characteristics of aircraft A-50 substantially were improved, agency notes. In particular, increased flying range A -50, were enlarged possibilities on the guidance of the air facilities of defeat to the target, the modernized aircraft can carry out in-flight refuelling.

According to the specialists, “new radar complex makes it possible to reveal to 150 targets at a distance to 600 kilometers, to accomplish guidance of the large groups of destroyers and to govern air traffic”.

Let us recall that at present the aircraft DRLO A-50 are begun to operate in the operations on patrolling of distant regions of the world by the bombers of Russian strategic aviation.

I got some goodies from Gefest and T company.

Nice scans Martinez! I guess that the low cost modernisation means keeping the radars and just upgrading the software and CPU. Seams potent though. And this will probably do for a gap filler until the Su-34 is fully deplotyed. There is probably also a good export potential. There are some Fencers users out therewho might be interested.

Does anybody know if this concept is used with the Algerian Su-24’s?

    S-300 to Iran

Iran says Russia to supply new air defence system

TEHRAN (AFP) — Iran announced on Wednesday it is to receive S-300 air missile defence systems from Russia, a move that risks angering the United States which has been critical of past arms sales to Tehran.

“The S-300 system will be delivered to Iran within the framework of a contract agreed in the past,” Iranian Defence Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar was quoted as saying by state radio, without giving the date of the contract.

“The timing of the delivery will be announced at a later date,” he added.

Earlier this year Moscow frustrated Washington by delivering to Tehran 29 TOR-M1 air defence missile systems, in a deal estimated to be worth 700 million dollars.

Iranian state media touted the S-300 as an even more sophisticated system than the TOR-M1, saying it could hit incoming enemy targets at a greater altitude. Iran said in January it had successfully test fired the TOR-M1.

The United States had urged Russia to cancel that sale, saying it was a mistake when the UN Security Council had imposed sanctions on Iran’s ballistic missile industry as part of measures against its nuclear drive.

There was no immediate official confirmation of the new delivery from Russia, but the Interfax news agency quoted a senior Russian defence source as saying Iran would receive several dozen of the systems.

“In line with the contract signed several years ago, Russia will deliver to Iran several dozen 3RS S-300PMU1 anti-aircraft systems,” the source said. Interfax said the deliveries would begin next year.

Russia, a veto-wielding permanent UN Security Council member, has important economic interests in Tehran.

A Russian contractor is also building and supplying fuel for Iran’s first nuclear power station in the southern city of Bushehr, a much delayed project expected to be ready next year.

Moscow approved the two UN Security Council resolutions imposing sanctions against Tehran over the nuclear crisis, but also succeeded in watering down the measures and has been lukewarm on US efforts for a third.

Nevertheless, Russia has strongly urged Iran to obey the main demand of the West in the nuclear standoff — that it suspends sensitive uranium enrichment activities.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia was actively working to persuade Iran to suspend enrichment, offering Tehran the prospect of full negotiations with world powers if it did.

“From the economic point of view, Iran has no need to continue its programme of enriching uranium,” he told the Vremya Novosti newspaper.

“We are trying to persuade the Iranians that Iran would benefit by suspending its programme, as this would immediately mean negotiations with the six (world powers dealing with the crisis) including the United States.”

Iran’s announcement of the delivery of the surface-to-air S-300 defence system comes amid continued international tensions over the Iranian nuclear programme, which the West fears could be used to make nuclear weapons.

The United States has never ruled out military action to end Iran’s defiance, although a US intelligence report published earlier this month appears to have momentarily taken the heat out of the standoff.

The report said Tehran had halted a nuclear weapons programme in 2003, undermining US President George W. Bush’s claims that it had an active atomic bomb drive. Iran denied ever seeking atomic weapons.

Iranian officials have vowed never to initiate any attack but have warned the armed forces will strike back with crushing force if the country’s territory is hit.

Should be the “Su-24M2” or the “Sukhoi upgrade”.

    From http://www.scramble.nl:

    Su-24M2
Upgrade for the Su-24M `Fencer-D’ developed by Gefest and T Company based at Zhukovsky. A development example has been undergoing trials at the 4th Combat Training Centre of tactical air forces in Lipetsk since late 1999. Upgrade includes replacement of standard Orbital-10 onboard computer with the new SVP-24 computer, installing a GPS receiver and the KAI-24 HUD. In addition to improving the navigation accuracy of the Su-24, it is claimed that the accuracy of unguided weapons attacks would be brought up to almost equal to the accuracy of guided munitions. It is reported that seven Russian Air Force examples have been upgraded as of mid-2002. Additionally seven Algerian Air Force examples have been upgraded. The work is being carried out at the Novosibirsk NAPO plant.

    Sukhoi
Upgrade option launched for the export Su-24MK `Fencer-D’ in June 2000 similar to the Su-24 Bis offered to Russian forces. Package includes installation of the A737 GPS receiver, a digital map system displayed on a radar screen, replacement of the original radar screen by the new IT-23M CRT monitor, installation of the new ILS-31 head-up display (HUD), new radio communications sets and flight data recording systems. The upgraded aircraft will also receive a new pre-flight data input system. An important aspect of the modernisation will be to change the aircraft servicing pattern to an on-condition maintenance system. The aircraft service life will be increased by up to 2,400 flight hours or 30 years of service. Optional proposals include the replacement of CRT displays with colour liquid-crystal displays (LCDs), new software for the onboard computer (offering improved accuracy for delivering unguided weapons) and a coded datalink. New weapons to be employed will be Kh-31A (AS-17 `Krypton’) anti-ship missiles, Kh-31P anti-radar missiles, Kh-59MK (AS-18 `Kazoo’) stand-off TV-guided missiles, KAB-500Kr TV-guided bombs, as well as a podded electronic warfare (EW) system

It is the 96L6 for shure. 91N6 is the equivalent of the BIG BIRD of the S-300PXX. I haven’t seen any pics of 91N6 but it should look just like a BIG BIRD.

Sorry, my mistake….. the Su-27 was flying TO Kaliningrad when it crashed in Lithuania – it was apparently not Kaliningrad-based.

I knew there was a Kaliningrad connection somewhere!

They’re not having much luck in Kaliningrad……

It was a Kaliningrad-based Su-27 that crashed recently in Lithuania – causing a diplomatic row.

    Ken

Finally I get the chance to correct the Flanker Man (didn’t think it was possible) 🙂

The Flanker that crashed on Lithuanian soil came from Lodeynoe Polye not Kaliningrad!

“I want to continue piloting SU 27” were Valery Troyanov’s first words in Russia
Pilot Valery Troyanov said to the journalists just after crossing borderline between Lithuania and Russia that he still wanted to pilot Su 27 fighter. As a REGNUM correspondent informs, he also thanked Russian MFA and Russian Air Forces for their help. Valery Troyanov planned to stay for a night in Kaliningrad with his wife Olga and then fly to Lodeynoe, Leningrad Region, where his air-unit is deployed.

How about a thread on any kind of aviation activity (air force and industry) that is occuring in Belarus.

I have heard there exists a MiG-29 upgrade.. perhaps some one else can add more input to developments in the country.

    MiG-29BM, Su-27UBM-1 and Mi-8MTKO-1

    http://www.vsr.mil.by/index/modderniz.html

The modernization of aircraft MiG-29 and Su-27 made it possible to considerably increase their combat potential due to the expansion of the of the armament used, possibilities of navigation complex, and also effectiveness of the instruction of crew. The installation of avionics of new generation to the modernized aircraft considerably increases the possibility of their application under the varied conditions. An inflight refueling equipment of aircraft MiG-29BM makes it possible to increase its flying range. According to the estimations of specialists in the region of armaments, the level of the Belorussian modernization of aircraft MiG-29 does not be inferior the ideology of the modernization of Russian SMT and it will be of definite interest for the foreign customers. /…/On 2 October during finalizing of the practical measures of the second stage of study on 227th military range the c-in-c of the armed forces of republic Belarus’ and president Aleksandr Grigor’evich Lukashenko were demonstrated the combat capabilities of the modernized aircraft Su-27UBM1 and helicopter Mi-8MTKO1 under the nighttime conditions.
